Lost our indoor range

[V] We lost the use of our indoor range because an anti-gun woman was worried about lead contamination. The range is located in the basement of a middle school, open only after school hours and run by the Recreation dept. No lead, not a trace, was found outside the range. The range did exceed OSHA standards which are based on 40hr/day, 52 weeks/year exposure. It would cost well over $50,000.00 to upgrade the ventilation system and we were not even sure that would meet the OSHA standard. Since my gunclub has overseen the use of it for the past 50 years without incident we were suppose to foot the bill to upgrade it. No one who was tested, including myself had any trace of lead in our system. The school board folded up like the wimps they are. My gunclub will eventually buid a new range on our property, but that will take years to get the permits. The old range was open to the public and many firearms safety classes were taught there. It was the only public access range within 50 miles.

    Why will it take years to get permits? That doesn't make sense. Get ahold of the NRA,they will help any way they can to get a new range going. They have come out to our range to make recomendation on expansions that all went thru smoothly. That really sucks that you lost your indoor range,all it takes is one jerk to put a stop to a shooting facility.

    Our outdoor range is located on Lake Michigan and has to meet DNR requirements, even though we have a 50 year old outdoor range there. Your gov't at work....

    I really hate to hear you lost your range, our firearms related "Rights" are being taken away by a chunk here and a chunk there.

    Indoor Range, sounds like an oxymoron.What is the appeal of shooting indoors anyhow? I guess its like a "wave pool" at a "water park". I thought the whole idea for owning firearms besides self defense but for the sport of it was to actually be OUTDOORS.

    SS, inside or outside is totally beside the point! The bottom line is it's one less place to shoot!

    We lost our range in the name of lead contamination.But the irony is the mountain the range sits in contains lead,and was mined for lead until the 1950s.Lead contamination is a powerful tool for anti/gunners and PETA green people.

    SS You must be from some chit boot town in the sticks, I live in a major metropolitan area and have a indoor range within 5 miles from my house, closest outdoor is 45 minutes away, both have thier pluses and minuses, I prefer indoor for handgun, Have my own lane and targets are on a automated wire, no wasting time for walking down lane to retreive. You really have done nothing more in your post, than prove your ignorance.

    Enlighten us, won't you, on how your unwanted personal opinions of shooting at a certain location have even the remotest thing to do with the subject?

    That your water-wings have a flat and are preventing you from joining the rest of the 6 year olds in the "wave pool" are equally telling of your ability to provide any valued input on this subject.

    Not from , moved to. And if building my home on 25 acres in the Sierra Nevada is your idea of chit , you have been huffing too much tailpipe.Furthermore, moving your legs and retrieving your paper targets might do you some good. I suspect if a drive thru target range was on the map you would sign up.

    SS: That is one hell of a poor attitude toward shooters. YOU are one of the reasons for range closures as your attitude shows. No help to the shooting bunch at all.

    The closes outdoor range is 10. I prefer the outdoor range but, when its 94 degrees in the shade in South FL, the air-conditioned indoor range is the way to go.

    To answer your question, that is why indoor ranges are popular.

    Really hard to shoot bullseye matches at night in Wisconsin winter outdoors. Night comes at 4pm or so. We have one of the best rimfire teams in the country.

    BINGO, nailed it. SOmetimes its close to 100 degrees here in central florida, on my little peninsula its almost unbearable to be outside for a long length of time. The outdoor range is maybe 4 miles from my house, the indoor range is maybe 2-3 minutes from my house. Its a matter of convenience sometimes.

    Point taken.I guess climate and time of day has alot to do with some members decisions to shoot indoors. Lucky for me its never too hot or too cold and there is always a "vertical slope " as a backdrop.

    You stated that the lead exposure was to high, according to OSHA standards. Not sure I would want my kid in a school where the lead tests out high. All the indoor ranges around here prohibt the use of lead ammo anymore. Might have been something for your range to tru to get around the problem and try to make the school board feel better about it.

    indoor ranges likewise up north keep shooters warm in -20 deg weather outside.
    and too, noise is kept to a minimum indoors.

    Our club built a Quonset type building 15 years ago with an indoor range and used it until it got shut down ... now, we are doing things right and many years later and many dollars later it may be open 24/7 with in a year from now!
