Windows Vista?
Dell is replacing my Laptop because its been nothing but trouble since Ive had it. They want me to take Windows Vista, but I have no idea and believe I can keep XP if I choose. Can anyone give me some advice about Vista?

All I can tell you is the new Dell that I bought for my mom, has Vista, and I ran into no problems setting it up, and she has had no issues, but she is certainly not a "power user"!
I still run XP, and have no plans to change anytime soon.0 -
Vista has been like any other microsoft product that is new. Its been plaqued with issues. Which microsoft says it has fixed. I personally think you can still get XP on Dell. 0 -
We bought a 6 new computers for the office this year. I had them put XP on all 6 and give us certificates for Vista with the understanding we will load it after the bugs are worked out. Hopefully we can load it before we have to replace the computers again...[;)] 0 -
Given my druthers I'd go XP...and recently did. 0 -
I'd say stick with XP until ALL software and hardware is compatible with it.
This is not a story about Vista, but a couple of years ago my research professor did a very silly thing and ordered a Dell workstation with 64bit processor for his office PC. Several of his programs did not work with XP-64 and I had to creatively juggle drivers to get his printer to work, since the driver he's supposed to be using was not available for XP-64 [B)]
I've heard that so far Vista has the same issues. Your old printer, scanner, or some other toys may not work with it for lack of drivers. Some software may also not work, so check with your peripheral hardware (printer, scanner, etc) and software providers to make sure their products are Vista compatible. If there is doubt, stick with XP.0 -
I'd stick with XP.
You're finding more and more manufacturers that are offering XP because Vista is a dog that many don't care for.0 -
I did tech support for dell, that's what I told customers when xp came out... if it needs to be reliable, stick with win2000, if it doesn't matter, then you can fool with xp if you want to, otherwise wait until the first service pack comes out. same thing applies here with vista. 0 -
Thanks for the advice, I really like XP and I think I can get them to give me XP instead of Vista. This Laptop runs XP and Ive never had software issues, only the computer is really a lemon. Im shocked Dell is actually going to replace it. But having friends at the Attorney General's Office might have had something to do with them doing whats fair and right. Ive kept my agreement with them and all I ask is they keep their's with me. 0 -
nope. they do that from time to time if the customer is having too many problems and they just can't get it fixed. mention "lawsuit" and they'll give you the contact information to their lawyer and terminate the call. I've done it myself a few times. 0 -
MicroSoft has found a very successful program in having its' customers provide beta testing on new products. I NEVER upgrade to a new OS until it's a couple of years old. I'm happy to let OTHER customers wring out the bugs.

Dell is also trying to "clean up" its customer service image, after all of the recent issues, that resulted in a class action,.....or was about to.
It got media coverage, and now they are far more friendly.0 -
Turn off the automatic upgrades.....dang if I haven't been on the phone with people from India for 6 hours trying to get things fixed because it "upgraded" itself three nights in a row!
Plus.....tell them not to install anything that isn't gonna STAY on your computer....for free. No "samples" of programs. Corel photo is still counting itself down on my computer....It went from 30 days til the free sample expires....to "0" days and has been there forever. It keeps asking me if I want it.....NO!!!!! Why they do that I'll never know.0 -

Actually, I wish the computer manufacturers would not load a lot of the crap that they do (re: AOL for one) and just include the CD in the package. Then if you wanted it, you can load it yourself.
Matter of fact, the best thing to do when you get a new computer is go ahead and wipe the hard drive and reload Windows. Then you get rid of all the preloaded crap.0 -
I don't know anything about vista, but xp has done well for me for 3 or 4 years with not one fatal error or lost data. 0 -
I have Vista on my laptop. I have found no problems except having to go the extra mile to load printer drivers. Don 0 -
I have vista and could not tell XP from Vista from a frogs butt.
As long as I turn it on and it runs I am happy!
PS; I turn it on and it runs. Life is good.0 -

Are the bugs EVER totally worked out of these sobs..?[;)]0 -
Got the bugs worked out just in time to release Vista. 0 -
i think you will be fine with either. i still prefer XP cause of the supported downloads like players and codecs and what not. Vista is still coming around, i have no problems yet. i have had my computer for a few months now and no problems. i still play with my xp computer more than not, but like i said i download music and watch alot of videos online, where vista you can't,cause of codecs issues. lots of betas and what not but i don't use them cause there beta's. 0 -
2000 and XP have worked out most bugs.
I won't go near Vista for a year or so.0 -

Thats alright,,I'm still running windows 980 -
I have vista On my Gateway Laptop, Its been Clunky to me, but I am also coming from windows ME. The one flaw that I don't like is the background up date and I am still try to figure out how to turn that feature off (downloading on its own).
Other than that, I will say Vista does have some nice features.0 -
They don'y have the bugs out of Vista yet, and as with every new Microsoft release, it eats up more memory and resources. I would stick with XP Professional for now. 0
