A WARNING For ALL You Stock Re-Finshers
...out there, especially new ones.
...I KNOW a lot of people have "heard" about oily rags, etc. catching fire on their own; but half way don't pay any attention to that fact, maybe because they have not seen it, or heard from a bud that it REALLY happens.
...A lot of milsurp collectors use BLO(boiled linseed oil) on their stocks...HIGHLY FLAMEBLE! Don't "think so"? Try this then. Take some cleaning patches, old rag and pour some BLO on. Take the patches and put them in your BBQ, close the lid...and give it 15min. to an hour, even 80 degrees is hot enough to kick this into motion.
...I had some rags w/half BLO and half mineral spirits catch fire in a card board box with it 80 degrees about 25 years ago...I had always "heard" that this could happen, half believed it; I have believed it 110% ever since. Nothing was burned but the rags and box, could have been a dissater though. I had been around BLO and paint thinners for years even then...and had never seen, or heard "first or second hand experience" of it happening...so I "duh'ed out here!
...So take heed ya'll, it can, and does happen! I was just reading an article and the guy mentioned the "BBQ" thing...made me think about the re-finishing posts here...disspose of those BLO patches/rags quick and properly....[;)]

Thanks for the heads up, never heard of this before. Guess Ill be better off sticking to the tru-oil.

I did just that several years ago. I threw some BLO soaked rags in a trash can in my garage. Several hours later I walked into the garage and smelled smoke. The rags were glowing and smoldering. I grabbed them out of the trash can and they instantly flared up into flames. Needless to say, I was very lucky and I now never leave oily rags or steel wool unsupervised. When I get done with them, they go into a sealed metal can and disposed of outdoors. I treat oil soaked gun cleaning materials the same way.
I have heard that petroleum based products aren't nearly so bad, but I don't trust that and treat ALL oil soaked products the same.

It's a good product and not dangerous to use. I use quite a bit of it, I just don't leave the oil soaked rags around when I'm done. They will truly spontaneously combust.0 -
GRD, what is your source of heated water.
I always believed the stories about piles of rags starting up, so, no piles of rags here. I leave thenm hanging or just burn them if they're done for.0 -

I work for a HVAC maintiance company.A few years ago we changed out several hundred oily polyester filters at a hugh machine shop.We put them in large plastic bags and stuffed them in our enclosed utility trailer to take them back to our shop and throw them in the dumpster.When we got back to the shop the dumpster was full so we left them in the trailer so we could dispose of them the next day.I live about 50 miles from our shop and when I got home,the phone was ringing.It was a young man that works with us.He said the trailer is on fire what do you want me to do?I told him to call the damn fire department.The fire investagator found it was spontanous combustion from the oily filters. 0
