Dixie Chopper, Dixon, Grasshopper,Bob Cat, etc

I am looking for a ZTR mower. Any good, bad, or ugly reports on them. There must be a hundred brands on the market. I have looked at Dixie's, John Deere, Toro, Grasshoppers, Bob Cats, Hustler, and Kobota. Thanks!

Scag... Best in the market! Love mine!

...X-Mark. I have a Lazer Z model. 80% of the commercial lawn guys around here use X-Marks.

...Keep in mind that these are lawn mowers, and nothing else. No rolling, tilling, or towing anything. They're built for one purpose and do it well.

I just use a Murray. They don't last long, but when they break, you just give it to a youngun to play with and go get another one.

Don't know about all the others, but I have had the same Dixon that I bought brand spanking new in 1984, and it is still running strong and cutting like crazy! Mine is one of the old chain and cone steered models. No fancy hydraulics on this one! Has a 14 HP Kawasaki motor that still runs like a top. Have to get the cones adjusted every couple of years. Costs about $45 now. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a new Dixon way ahead of the others. You mileage may vary though! [:D]

I just bought a new Simplicity Citation ZTR, 23 HP Briggs motor, 52 inch deck, nearly $6,000. Seems to cut grass.[;)]

Simplicity has had one of the better decks for a long time now (this one is heavy!) and the new Dixon seems to be lighter than the models from a few years ago. I would sure check to see if they have been cheapened a bit since they were bought up. It's not uncommon for someone to buy a great product, strip the quality, and live on the name for awhile. Black and Decker went through that with their line of hand tools, and some of their "competitive" models were pretty good sinkers for a casting rod.

I am still using a Snapper that my dad bought in 1969.I put a new engine on it about 10 years ago.I bought my mom a Husqvarna 20 hp last year and when I serviced it I found out its just a Murray painted orange.I have had people tell me Snapper does not have the quality they once had.I guess if I had to buy another mower I would look at Kabota,or try to find another 40 year old Snapper.
