Looks to me like your dad is overwhelmed. Just start cleaning up the trash and help him out. You may be surprised. When your stuff gets that far gone, you lose hope, and have no idea where to start.

Oh I tried that once. He gave me a lecture about the value of cut links of chain that CAN be welded back together, or those 3 inch pieces of welding rod. They CAN be fillers for a big crack. He pulled out every thing I put in the garbage can.

Its obvious that he lacks any ability to organize! Needs someone to come in and set the shop up right for him.

That said, I have known many people who are what I call "junkers" they feel good surrounded by junk, like pack rats, and if it was all cleaned up and organized they would turn it back into the same mess within a very short time.

The junk defines their personality, they, of course, don't know this and would never acknowledge that fact![:0][:0]

my own father does this also, he was raised during the depression and was dirt poor, if you throw it away he'd grab it, might need that someday. but he managed to raise all of us on little of nothing. even with his mess in his shop, i have to admire him. cut your pop some slack, he may have been through the same.[;)][8D]

A buddy of mine had a shop like that. When he moved, he literally swept up the dirt, and took it with him. His reasoning....it was easier to take the dirt than to pick all the screws and washers out of it that he wanted to keep.

that makes me feel real good about my mess, a person could have a nervous breakdown trying to find a lost tool in that
