Well, that should teach me a lesson!
The dental work is kind of over, at least for a while. $3124.00 of which insurance covered $1500. The root canal tooth (a lower molar) has a filling in it and will get a crown next year when insurance kicks back in. I'm maxed out for the year right now.
Everything is tender, and the deep cleaning is finished. Liquid and soft food (blended, like baby food) for a week, then another cleaning in six months. Can't brush my teeth for a week (are you kidding me!) and have to just keep my mouth rinsed, take antibiotics and anti-inflammatories for the next two weeks.
Now for the real kick in the butt, none of this would have been necessary if I had just continued doing my twice a year cleanings instead of skipping the last two years. I knew I was over due, but I thought it had been maybe a year, not 27 months! Guess I've been real distracted with all the other stuff!
You folks be smarter than this old hard headed fool, and don't skip the cleanings. It really isn't worth the money or the pain![V]

I'll second what dheffley had to say about brushing and having regular check ups on your teeth. I didn't. Now my store boughts sit on my desk cause I cann't wear them. Worst thing I miss eating is apples and peanuts. Sure do wish I'd taken the time to take better care of my teeth. [V] 0 -
I haven't gone to the dentist in 16 years. My back tooth has been broken in half from a guy walking up and kicking me in the face one day.

That is a bummer, Danny...that is some of the worst pain we as men can have.
I got a fractured skull a couple days before Christmas...and it also damaged the nerves running to the teeth on the left side of my jaw. I feel nothing much yet..sorta like the shot the dentist gives you to deaden the nerve...and can taste little, either...all of which doesn't stop me from eating a steak...at least after the first few days, when opening my mouth felt like somebody was trying to tear my face off...[:D] Diddn't help my being pretty, euther!!![:0]0 -
...I'm doing all I can to keep my own teeth. I go every 4 months for routine cleaning, and despite my best efforts, the crap she scrapes off is pretty gross. I've had gum surgery (my wife, twice) to stitch closed the pockets in my gums. Going for a week with your gums full of stitches is a real treat.
...I have some crowns, and bonding, but everything is pretty stable for now. You need to go AT LEAST once a year for a good going over. Better to catch problems early than too late.
...I'm lucky to have a very gentle dentist. He goes way out of his way to make sure that I'm comfortable and not in pain. He has a method of giving novacain that the shot feels like a slight pinch. He's always asking if I'm OK, and if I feel anything, to raise my hand, so he can stop. Ask around and get other folks' opinions about their dentist, and choose one that way.0 -
Sorry Danny, that sounds unpleasant.
Still, it's hard to believe things can go from OK to VERY MUCH NOT OK in 27 months. My father spent the first 55 years of his life not brushing and.....still has all of his teeth! About ten years ago his dentist told him his gums were receding, so he flossed....for a while (like 2 months). He still has all his teeth.
On the other hand, my bad teeth are entirely due to my poor dental hygiene for about 15 years.
Teeth are weird creatures. Sorry yours are giving you problems.0 -
Our dentist sends reminder cards out every six months & when we're there for the cleaning we set another appointment for 6 mos down the road. While brushing is important, I think diet has a great deal to do with it, since the primary problem involves the bacteria that eat sugar and excrete acid. 0 -
Dheff, I caught the beginning of your dental saga a while ago. Glad that's over for you. I get on here and read just about every day, (even when I'm living in a hotel in Norman,OK., like I was the last two weeks) but rarely post. This is, however, a topic I have a little experience with. A couple years ago my dentist told me I had to come in more than my usual "once every five years whether I needed it or not". My deepest pocket was a 13, had a couple 8's. I was looking at losing a couple teeth. After deep cleaning and an implanted chemical chip of some kind I was told to get a Soniccare toothbrush and a Waterpik. I also go in for cleaning every 3 months instead of every 6. My deepest pocket is now around 3, my appointment with the oral surgeon was canceled, and at 51 I have all but one of my teeth left. If you haven't done so already I highly recommend the Soniccare and the big (tank type, not rechargable) Waterpik. A little spendy, but less than the dentist bills. 0 -

The dentist told me the same thing and I have already purchsed them even though I can't use them for another week. Got the adjustable pressure, large take Waterpik, and the rechargeable Sonacare so I can carry it to work with me and brush after lunch. She also had me get a flossing device and the little "between the teeth" brushes. She also said to use a little toothpaste on the brushes and the floss when I use them.
My deepest pocket was 9. She uses the laser and said if I will continue with the program, they will never get deeper than 2. She also uses the laser (Periolase) which makes it easier![^]0 -
I had decent enough teeth, but a few fillings from when I was a kid.
Then at about 30 my gums started receding rather rapidly and teeth
almost falling out. Went to the dentist and he asked what I thought
I needed, I said "them all yanked and replace with plactic". After
a short exam he agreed.
He yanked them all in one sitting, fit me for dentures a few weeks
later, and wanted me back in a week for "adjusting" them. That was
20yrs ago, and I didn't even go back for the adjustment. Haven't
seen a dentist since, and do all minor tuneups myself.[:D]
I know all people do not have such good luck with dentures, but for
me..no problemo.[:)]0 -
Danny, I'm just as few months ahead of you. Had surgery to remove wisdom teeth, deep cleaning, one root canal, gum surgery to close pockets, and I have them cleaned and checked once every six months by my dentist, once alternating six months by the gum surgeon, so that I see one or the other every three months. Every day I use the little between the teeth brushes, and some small gum line brushes, as well as floss, then periodontal paste, and last a periodontal rinse.So far, i'm well over the $10,000 dollar mark, and that doesn't count my insurance.
My brother on the other hand..well, same problem, but no dentists. About once a month he extracts his own teeth because they get loose. He laughs at me for spending money on dental help, in spite of the fact that I have most of my teeth and he can't even chew gum. He insists they are taking me for my money. They sure as heck ain't gittin' his.. Ain't he smart??[:D][:D]0 -

It is funny how that works. I am the same way. If common sense don't do it then pain or money will. Or wimmin, they are as effective or even worse than pain and money for being a persuader.0 -
