I think we will have to stick with Unigraphics NX because of the 9 axis machines. No one else is willing to jump into the post building, and since we already have UG posts for the machines, I think we will just upgrade from NX2 to NX5.

I managed to get full functioning versions of MasterCAM X2 and NX2 installed on my home PC, and ran them through the full test. Pro-E, Esprite, SurfCAM all fell short.

We'll stick with SolidWorks 2007 for modeling, and UG for CAM. At least I eneded up with some full versions for my contract programming! Neat![^]

I have been wanting to get a copy of Part Maker to try out at home. From what I have seen and heard it knocks the pants off of other multi axis software.

How do you like Mastercam? I haven't had a chance to play with the drawing capabilities, but liked the fact that the machining was practically the same.

What was your opinion of Esprite? I personally think that they have made it harder to use then necessary and the learning curve is greater then Mastercam and ProE combined. At my current job the production manager bought the software without advising the programmer at the time. That was an idiot move.

Still the current manager. He admits the mistake though and should have did some more research. I think Esprite gave him a good sales speech. At the time they had 7 axis machines for under a year. The machines themselves hadn't been on the market that long and the controller was also new. I can understand a company not having a post for it, but for them to take 3-4 years in order to get it somewhat close to correct for software that cost 15 to 20 Gs with a couple thousand dollar upgrade fee every year that software better do what its supposed to do.

The CAM side of MasterCAM is pretty good. The CAD side is fair, but both Pro-E and SolidWorks beat it.

Esprite did the best other than UG on the millturn machines as far as the 9 axis of operation. I was fairly impressed, and their customer service seems to be top notch. And, although it seems a little more user intense than others, nothing is more user intense than UG, so I didn't have much of an issue with it.

I was not impressed with SurfCAM.
