I would appreciate opinions or ideas.
I am thinking about proposing a fun match at my gun club. It would involve military surplus rifles at realistic ranges. The rifles would need to be bolt-action service rifles in original condition. The 1903s, Mauser 93s and 98s, SMLEs, Type 99s, Moisins etc. would be eligible to compete. No scopes or any modification to the rifles from standard, infantry rifle issue condition. Caliber must be 6.5mm or larger and must be shot with full-power ammo.
I was thinking of shooting in 3 stages. At 100 yards 5 rounds from any position with no time limit and slings may be used (this stage only). At 50 yards 5 rounds from any position except prone (kneeling, standing or squatting OK). The last would be at 25 yards, standing only, 10 rounds (reload mandatory so the guys with 10 round magazines- like the SMLEs- can only load 5 to start), and this stage would be timed (how does 30-40 seconds for 10 rounds with a reload sound?).
The stages would sort of suggest defenders firing on an assaulting force (can you tell that in the 25 yard stage they are "in the wire?") and the targets would be the B27 silhouette type. Scoring would be simple: any hit in the black of the figure shape counts and presumes to kill or wound the enemy taking him out of the fight. Whoever has the most kills at the end of the 3 stages is the winner. We could run each shooter through the stages 3 times for a total of 60 rounds. I think that sounds about right.
I know there a lot of folks who have these rifles but I don't know of any organized shooting using them. At least there aren't any in my neck of the woods. The idea is to keep is simple and fun with a hint of realism to make it interesting.
So what do all think? Is it being done? Sound like fun? Any suggestions or observations welcomed.

I just had a thought (I know, beginner's luck). How about if we add one more stage. We hang a bag of sand 10 yards downrange and each shooter must make a bayonet charge against it after the last shot. [:0] 0 -
We just did one of those last weekend. We had Mausers, Enfields, '03s, MNs 30-40 Krags. You name it....we had a blast (no pun). We also allowed a civilian clone of an M14. All in all, a very good day. Good competition and made some new friends. (Notice I did not mention my score.[xx(])
We shot 5 standing and 5 kneeling at 100 yards, 5 sitting at 200 yards, and 5 prone at 300 yards. We used the 200 yard target.
Actually I like your idea better. A little pressure might do me some good! If you don't mind, I'll suggest this at our next meeting. The only thing I might change is to have a time limit on all stages.0 -

10 Yards! I can't run 5 any more![}:)]
Sounds like a plan! Be nice if you could find some WWII or Korean War vets to participate, and include the M1.0
