Do you think they should end miner search?
After three weeks, 6 holes and 3 additional deaths, do you think the search for the miners in Utah should continue? What are the chances of finding anything but bodies if they ever even find that? Perhaps just sealing the mine is the best answer. The latest news is that they are now going to put a robot down the hole to continue looking? Thoughts anyone?

I think that the mine owner as already said that the mine is too dangerous and will be shut down. And to those who say that the bodies should be recovered, will you volenteer to go into a mine that as already killed three rescue workers that had a safety official right there with them? How many more lives is it worth to get dead meat? 0 -

I'm sorry, it is not my family and I don't claim to feel their horrible pain, but I think that the familys of the still living rescue workers deserve some consideration also. And if you think about it what good would it do you? Dig for them yourself just to die somewere close to them? 0 -

I agree - those miners trapped are not my family and I would not be so hypocritical as to claim I would die for them specifically. I'm just saying that if they were my family, I wouldn't give up.
And I agree, the families of the rescue workers need to be considered.
And I know it wouldn't do me any good to die going after one of my loved ones in a dangerous mine, but my heart tells me I would rather die close to them than live far from them.0 -

Im a surface miner and it breaks our hearts to hear something like whats happened to those miners. The only thing i dont understand is how they mine the coal. They leave pillars of coal to support the roof and then when they're backing away and leaving that area they pull the pillars?? Has anyone else heard of this practice? 0 -

Yes it is common practice in underground mining.
Cuts are made long ways (passages) and then cross cuts are made. Once it is done you have what resembles the lay out of city blocks with coal filling the spaces.
Once the passages and cross cuts are made. The remaining coal that make up the pillars is then removed as the miners retreats. Some pillars may be left to support homes, roads, rivers etc. This in turn leaves a large empty space supported normally by large timbers called crib blocks (as you should know). Once finished that section of the mine is then sealed off never to be entered again. Over time the cribbing rots away and at times this allows the roof to fall.

They lost three more men attempting a rescue operation. What I was suggesting was that they launch a recovery operation where you go in on the assumption that you are there to retrieve bodies. No need to reopen an unstable shaft, dig a new one or take the whole top of the mountain down piece by piece. Maybe it is my claustrophobia talking, but I couldn't bear the thought of being stuck in that mine for eternity. I keep imagining those miner's spirits not knowing they are really dead and waiting down there forever. A man gives his life for the company, should be no expense spared to get his body out of that hole to be buried proper. 0 -
...Sad to say, but after ths length of time and considering the mountain is "active" AND the temp is 58 degrees and wet...I cannot see that these guys could be alive at this point. I think that every place that has been the site of multiple deaths should be paved over and made into a permenent memorial anywhere in the nation, then in 10 years we will have thousands of memorials to our stupidity and bad fortune and always be reminded of our mortality.
We can redo the highway system around these memorials and big stretches of cities can be memorial parks. Pretty soon there will be no more multiple deaths because we will live in one big memorial.
Then we'll go conquer some nation to get more land to build more memorials.
