Engine Question.

Ive decided not to dump a buttload of money into my saturn. Instead im looking at a new project. I plan on getting a Nissan 240sx. Now the american 240 is a little different than the one offered in japan, because of emisisons and a lot of other things. So im going to try and build a JDM Silvia. Silvia is the name of the 240sx in japan. Almost the same car just a different name. JDM, means Japanese Domestic Market, parts from the japanese silvia/240 are JDM parts. Now theres a couple different motor offerings for the silvia, theres a KA motor, which i think is the weakest, then theres the SR20DE motor, which is a little stronger. And then theres the HiPo, SR20DET, which is the turbo silvia motor. Now i see the sr20det motor is about 1500-1750 dollars, used with low miles. I can get a cheap sr20de motor for almost half of that. Theres no way i can do an engine swap, so i have to factor that into the cost. I would like to buy a complete silvia for about 3000, but theyre hard to find with SR20DET swap already done. So if i can find a beat silvia with a SR20DE in it, how much would it cost to have a shop install a complete turbo setup? Any help is appreciated.

    A complete turbo setup if you do not have the turbo will cost upwords of $5k I would think. The turbo kit alone should run around $3k and installation at least $2k. Plus if the car was not a factory turbo you are going to have some tuning issues to contend with. I think you are better off finding a car with a stock turbo or else adding nitrous.

    Look for Toyota Supra Turbos. Cheaper project in the long run and gobs more power than a 240 that everyone builds up.

    No engine swap required. They sell cheap, look on fleabay.

    Obi , my brother is a supra freak, a supra freak, hes supra freaky! but i dont really like the supra. Im gonna look for a 240 with the sr20det motor, which is a factory turbo, and maybe upgrade the turbo, get a nice turbo timer, and a nice intercooler. Or i would like any hatch civic with a turbo already installed, and ill just upgrade it. thanks guys.

    by the way, theres a black one locally that needs the throwout bearings in clutch replaced, and seats, and stuff, but it has that motor swap you want, and he has all the parts you need it says, its built for racing

    Its very hard to find a skyline, they not US legal, they dont pass emisions, and a list of other things, they cost about 65g's here, but if its not already converted, theres a place in California that makes them legal for a whole bunch of money. Nice car, Right hand drive.

    I thought those were front wheel drive only - I think you need rear or all wheel drive to drift.

    Noise, the Sr20det and sr20de are both great engines, but they are high revving only. Great things can be and have been done to both, but why not save yourself a couple of grand up front and use a KA25? The KA is a truck based engine that is built to take a ton of abuse (such as turbo charging), it has a ton of low end torque (compared to the sr20de) plus your starting out with more displacement (it can also be bumped to almost 3.0L). Just remember, horsepower looks good on paper, but torque makes a car move.

    MK, can you find some specs on the KA25, i keep getting a russian helicoptor engine, which i dont think will fit in a 240! lol. [:D]

    Noise, I don't know why I put down KA25 when I ment to say KA24, after all the darn car is called a 240 because it has a 2.4 liter engine... Oh well, thats what I get for not checking facts before I hit the post button, here are a few links for you:

    Watch the "Fast and the Furious" (the second one). It is a method of driving where you spin your wheels continuously and never make complete contact with the ground. It is similar to sprint cars on a dirt track. It requires quite a bit of skill.

    1 didnt have much drifting, the third, tokyo drift, did.
