question for HVAC experts
I have 1 return on every level. The basement return has been purposely constricted so as to cut the airflow in half. Would it be a good idea to remove this restriction and get more return air from the cooler basement? This would mean that less air returns from the other 2 floors.

Your funace life will increase and if you have AC it will work much better with more return air...cant have too much return air, thats why alot of people mess up not having enough return air. 0 -
Better to restrict the "supply" air to the basement, than to restrit the return air from the basement. 0 -
More return is always better.
A rule of thumb we use here is 200 sq." per ton.0 -
"Better to restrict the "supply" air to the basement, than to restrit the return air from the basement."... +1, ALSO KEEP YOUR AIR FILTER CLEAN/CHANGED 0 -
There is a balance you need to obtain. We can't tell you here what you need to do without inspecting your system. If you don't have enough return in the house it will restrict the supply in the house because you've created a pressurized situation. Output level = input level. Take it breezy, Cheeze 0 -
+1 on the fact you can never have enough return air volume, and the cooler the return air the less strain on the AC. 0
