Electronic Caller

I'm not familiar with any of the electronic calls; but it seems to me that volumn would be the least important feature. Predators hearing is very acute so I htink of higher importance is correctness and clarity of tone.

I just bought one of the Cass Creek Callers this past week at Bass Pro Shop. They offer a auxillary speaker that hooks up to the unit and with several feet of cord attached to the speaker.
I am going to try mine and maybe work on some coyotes.

Hint: I used to call foxes with just a regular cassette player and one of the PA speaker horns that you would use with a CB radio. I took alot of foxes with that inexpensive setup.

I have one of the Cass Creek calls. Works fairly well, but if the yotes you are after have been hunted hard in the past, they really won't come to anything like that. They get VERY suspicious, VERY quickly. One thing I added sounds odd, but it worked. Bought one of those gizmo's (got mine at a Cracker Barrel Restaurant) that is an electronic "wobble" ball with an imitation coon tail on it. Turn it on, lay it down, and it shakes and rattles and rolls all over the place. Took mine, doused the "tail" with coon urine cover scent and set it out about 50 yards from my blind and turned it on. That and the caller really brought them in!

Yep, caller alone wont get it. They need to see something when they get in range. My cass creek caller doesnt have enough cord to get me far enough away from the sound.

I fully intended to make serious comments about this subject, but then I saw Wallie's drawrings.

Seriously, I have used a Phantom Predator caller. I was very inexperienced when I started using it. Now I am just inexperienced. It is very effective, but it was obvious to me they do learn. I have not used it in the last two seasons, and I'm thinking about breaking it out again. Right now with all the snow on the field, I would think they are getting hungry and would come out easier.

I did copy the sounds to an mp3 file, but I never found an economically priced mixer to overlay the sounds and make a cd.

I have heard the Cracker Barrel ball works well before, but never tried it.

I've done a lot of research on this subject here, but it's been a while since I was there. Great photos too.

Tried a caller once in the pasture with cattle in it. Does a great job calling in the cows. We set it up and went into an abandoned office trailer. The cows encircled it and would put there nose right up to the speaker.

We have had luck with the Cass Creek calls...the external speaker gives it better sound. I made a caller from a cheap MP3 player that works great. Plus you can program it anyway you want..!

Made mine useing a Sony Discman, 50 feet of monster wire and a PA speaker frome Radio Shack.

Something most folks don't realize is that everybody and his brother is useing a rabbit call of one sort or another. I've found that when the rabbit sounds fail I'll make another set-up a 1/4 mile away and start the distressed feline cd. Works every time.

    How about distressed sheep sound?

Coyotes around here eat on lamb, but I can't seem to find a distressed sheep sound.

Have to tell this story. Back 40 years or so, my Dad had one of the original critter calls, a phonograph with a large bullhorn attached. It was heavy and mounted on a backpack board/frame.
He would let it set in the garage and my sisters and I would play our records on it when he was not using it.
Was he surprised one day when him and a friend went fox hunting. They set up and pulled the record out and started the machine. Next thing they knew, the music started blurting and the tune, "Here comes Peter Cottontail" started playing. Dad said him and his friend layed on the ground just laughing!
I don't if Peter Cottontail was in distress or not.

I gotta say this-any sound a sheep makes is distressed. You might try a fawn bleat. We used to call around here but since I've been all messed up I haven't been out calling much. They must be eating deer as there aren't any rabbits left. I wish they'd change over to coons or possums or something else that I don't eat. The biggest problem we had with tape players was keeping them warm enough to work but then we started using handwarmers in the caller case and that helped.

Yeah, I just had to throw that "sheep in distress" out there and see if there are any jokes. I couldn't resist. It's not often you can use the term "sheep in distress" in a sentence.

I'll try the fawn and see what happens. I know the Phantom Predator caller is more expensive, but I see the new ones use exchangable cards for turkeys or whatever. With this caller, you can also overlay sounds. Add rustling leaves to sex it up. It also has a "Squealing Pig" sound.

Dang. I got to use "sheep in distress" and "squealing pig" in the same post.

    Speaking of sheep in distress.

Just the other day Mr. Plaid and I were driving to town when we happened to see a sheep with it's head stuck in a fence. Well you all know me. I pulled over got behind the sheep and pulled my pants down. I turn around to ask if he want's any of this and he replies "HELL YEAH!". Well I'll be damned if he didn't run right on down and stick his head in the fence[:0]

Awh, now my feelings are hurt. Personal attacks for no apparent reason whatsoever. This could start something that spirals out of control, and at this hour that anger and bile could affect every post on at least half a dozen forums. Then somebody gets locked out. By morning the damage could look like .... well lets just say it wouldn't be pretty.

Call it valor, but I'll stop it here, before that point.

Actually I just don't have the wit to go beyond a Bevis and Butthead moment by using the term... heck, at this hour, I don't even remember what I thought was so funny.
