'Grizzled' 59 Yr Old Ex Army Paratroop Wrests Gun from UT Cop Killer

A high-speed police chase came to an end at an Arby's restaurant Monday, but not before a gun went off, a hero came to the rescue and more than a few tears were shed.

Curtis Allgier had led police from the University of Utah Hospital where police say he shot and killed a corrections guard.

Thanks to police spikes, Allgier's carjacked Explorer limped to a stop at a now infamous Arby's on 1700 South Redwood Rd. Allgier left the car rolling as he ran into the restaurant.

With Allgier inside with a gun - and with Arby's employees and customers trapped - 59-year-old Eric Fullerton jumped into action.

The grizzled army paratrooper managed to wrestle the gun away from the much bigger Allgier.

"I instinctively did what needed to be done. He was going to kill that guy and I wasn't going to let him kill him," Fullerton said.

While police are happy to have Allgier in custody and thankful more aren't hurt, for some who were at the restaurant the fear remains.

Shirley Smiley was also at Trolley Square when another gunmen was on the loose and now she's thinking of getting a weapon too.

"I might have to to protect myself and my family," Smiley said.

With Allgier on his way back to jail and his evidence not far behind, a few can simply no longer hold their emotions back.

"We live in such a crazy, criminal world that I don't know no more," said Silvana Mirabella, wiping away tears.

    As far as the badguy, I agree with execution on general principles.

    Azzhat never got a chance to hide.

    After head-shooting the CO he ran out of the hospital and jacked the vehicle, but within minutes had more cops behind him than he could count.
