GB reunion--what's the odds of this happening

Yesterday, I was roaming around on GB checking out prices on various handguns comparable to what I own. On one, I happened to glance at the seller's name (gun shop) and noticed a family name (somewhat unusual) that was the same as a family I knew as a kid (about 50 years ago) in a small town in TN. I knew this family had moved to KY when I was about 11-12 yo. They had 2 son's and a daughter---all about my age and being in a small rural town---everyone knew everyone. I noticed the seller's location as being in the same vicinity in KY that I thought this family had moved to. Couldn't be----I thought "what the heck" and sent an email.

Got a reply late last night. The seller is one of the son's of the kid I grew up with in TN. Small world. What's the odds of, virtually, crossing paths again after 50+ years (especially, on the internet)?

    Very rare. But like you said, Its a small world. stranger things have happened. You said he is the son of your friend? Is your friend still around? Why don't you guys do a little get together or something [:)]

    I'm teaching at a small college in Arkansas. During a class discussion I mention my home town in California. One student asks me what high school I attended. Turns out her mother went to the same school and was in my class. At home I got out the yearbook and there she was. Small world.

    this is a dead horse.
    most would agree the odds of it happening are slim. people are just too busy to put gb in the limelight long enough to make it 'worth it.' a one on one is more possible than a group. too much logisitcs involved and most times it flops when its overmanaged.

    With the advent of the internet, the odds are improved tremendously. Would this have happened without it? Don't think so. Places like ClassMates.com have reunited MANY people. The odds that you would find that family here on GB are smaller, of course.

    Not to "hi-jack" the thread, BUT...When i moved to Florida in the late 70's i met a local girl from Jupiter Fl. and immediately had a "crush" on her. Being a few years older than me, i couldn't get the "time of day" from her.She moved away(to Va. i think, and got married,became an "over the road trucker". After 26 years.i met her again in a chat room.
    She's now my wife, and i still have the "crush"...[:D]

    Actually it happens all the time. And get-togethers are not the least bit uncommon. The spring that I joined GB, a group got together in Virginia and then met in Missouri the next year. Four of us got together last summer in Idaho and I'll attend two more shindigs this year (at least). All you can do is make it known you'd host a few folks and you'll be surprised how many show up---so be careful how you word your invitation--you could end up hirsutus non gratus.
