Form over function... kooky?
The optics currently available are marvels of modern engineering. But I don't like the looks of the big, huge scopes. My taste in rifles tends to run towards the conservative. almost "old fashioned" and I like the scope to compliment this theme.
I find myself drawn towards the 20mm scopes as they have a definite European feel to them. On a classic sporting rifle like a Mauser 98 or Ruger #1 a Weaver K3 or a Bushnell 2.5 or a Leupold M8 with the 20mm objective lens just looks fine to me.
I don't do any serious shooting. I am not a hunter and my target shooting is informal at best so I don't need the latest in expensive optics. I prefer an older style scope that to me just looks good on the rifle.
Is this kooky?
Here is a Ruger Tropical in .458 Winchester topped by a Weaver K2.5-
This is an older BRNO 602 in .375 H&H wearing a Bushnell 2.5x20-

Frank - I don't think calibers such as those, need scopes at all.
But...if you are going to, the ones you've picked look fine.

Like I said, I don't hunt so the 458 gets used only on targets (which are much smaller than a buffalo) and I shoot better with a scope.
I consider the 375 to have enough range capability to use a scope in the field. I used to compete with this very rifle in metallic silhouette matches that included a 200 meter target. I found the cartridge flat-shooting enough that I would use it at that range on game and at 200 meters I need a scope.0 -

Look good to me, SP! I was right there with you on the scope issue. Then I got old, then I needed bifocals. Now I need all the help I can get! So for me, now bigger objectives are better. 0 -

K- Of course it's showing off a little. Everyone is allowed and I don't consider it a bad thing.
I recall MC posting photos of what seemed like hundreds (maybe I exaggerate a bit) of MGs and very exotic (and expensive) specialty guns. Again, that's why we're here... to see stuff like that. Then he posted photos of some very pricey cars parked in the driveway of a luxury home. Still, fine by me. But, I say that was bragging just a bit.
But it's like someone once said, it ain't bragging if you can back it up. He had the money, and the guns, and the cars, and it doesn't bother me if he wants to show them off. But let's call it what it is. I don't like the fact that if I post photos of two rifles I get called a show-off but he gets a pass when posting photos of a collection worth 1,000x what I have.
BTW- I did not delete that thread if that's what you are suggesting. I don't know who did. I went to bed and in the morning it was gone along with a bunch of other stuff that I also did not delete.

Not kooky at all. I totally agree with you. I never thought I would like the looks of a scope on my Marlin 1895, but I put a 4x Burris shortmag(20 mm) on it and it looks really nice on there. I know that this is a newer model, but the same basic design as the ones you have mentioned. Also have a Bushnell 1.5 or2.5x5(can't remember) on my .308. Looks better and is a lot lighter and handier.

After cataract surgery 3 years ago I see well enough to use a scope. Open sights are still a problem beyond about 50 feet. 0 -

I tend to side with those who question a need for a scope on a .458 Win Mag. I've had a couple and I couldn't imagine spending very much time shooting "targets" with them. The recoil gets old pretty fast, not to mention that it's expensive. We're not talking about a Barrett here. Just my 2 cents worth and no offense meant.[:)] 0 -
I wound up with this rifle as payment for a loan made to a friend. It got to be a couple years and even though I told him I was in no hurry for the money he said he would sell this rifle to raise some cash to pay me back. I said that if he was determined to sell it I would take the rifle rather than have him sell it to a stranger.
My policy on guns acquired from friends is that they can buy it back at any time for the original price so he may want it back, someday.
Meanwhile, I load it to 45/70 levels for plinking so using a scope is not a problem as recoil isn't all that much.0
