Killer's thwarted last-meal wish inspires charity
Public fulfills request for pizza for homeless after Tennesseean's execution

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A convicted murderer put to death in Tennessee this week got his last meal wish after he died.
Philip Workman had turned down the usual final meal of his choice traditionally offered the condemned, asking instead that a vegetarian pizza be given to a homeless person.
Prison officials refused to send out a pizza, and Workman died Wednesday by lethal injection.
But news accounts of his request touched a nerve with the public.
Nashville's Union Rescue Mission received 170 pizzas. Media reports said listeners to a radio station in Minnesota also ordered pizzas sent to another organization for troubled youngsters.
Dorinda Carter, spokesperson for the Tennessee Department of Correction, said, "Taxes are to be spent on specific things for the care of the inmates." But she acknowledged there was no regulation against carrying out Workman's request.
An official at the mission said "the pizzas were enjoyed greatly by our clientele."
Workman, 53, was convicted of killing a Memphis police officer in 1981. He was robbing a Wendy's restaurant and got into a gun battle with police. He wounded one officer and shot at a second, but he contended another officer's bullet accidentally killed police Lt. Ronald Oliver.
There's a moral to this story somewhere...

He's not the first to make a request that his last meal be given to a homeless person... Robert Madded (Txs, executed 05/28/1997) did the same.
Personally, I think it is noble of someone to think of someone less fortunate than themselves, even in their final hours.... However, I don't think it needs a bunch of extra publicity.0 -

I read where he did this because he was also homeless when he committed his crime. He failed to mention that he was a big-time crackhead, which is the reason he was homeless and hard up for cash when he murdered a cop while committing a robbery. Well, at least that's what his defense attorney said in court. [;)]
Being homeless and hungry are only symptoms. It would've been a more humanitarian gesture if he'd gone to the root issue, admitted his mistake in getting strung out and requesting that people make donations to drug rehab facilities. This pizza stunt of his just created a bunch of crackheads with tomato sauce stains on their fingers.0
