Girl gets detention for hugging friends
MASCOUTAH - A 13-year-old junior high school student was given two days of detention after school officials spotted her hugging friends after school last Friday.
Megan Coulter, an eighth-grade student at Mascoutah Middle School, was hugging her friends goodbye after school Friday when vice principal, Randy Blakely, saw her and told her she would receive two after-school detentions.
Blakely had previously warned Coulter that she was in violation of the school's policy on public displays of affection after she was seen hugging a student at a football game.
The school's policy says that "displays of affection should not occur on the campus at any time."
Coulter's mother, Melissa Coulter, says she has requested to speak with the School Board at its next meeting, and is mystified about the punishment leveled at her daughter.
Mascoutah Superintendent Sam McGowen said today that the district's policy helps prevent misunderstandings and unwelcome expressions of affection.
- Wish they would have had these kinds of morons forward thinking educators to keep me safe from all those unwelcome hugs I got in high school...

Hell I think there was another school kid suspended in Alabama just recently for hugging a friend at school whos parent had just died.
Our girlfriend has a 5 year old daughter that kissed another girl on the cheek in school. They called her and said she needed to explain what is acceptable and not acceptable sexually to her daughter...5 year old daughter...and if it happened again that it could be suspension or even reported as sexual harassment. WTHO?
This zero tolerance PC BS is out of hand.0 -

We had rules when I was in school (eons ago [:p])...no holding hands or kissing or hanging on each other. But that was when we were in Jr High and up.
Girls giving each other a hug before the weekend I really see no problem with...if that is the case, then maybe we need to make sure that the guys stop the high fives, the pat on the butt on the football field or the traditional holding of the hands in the group huddle before the game (if that even happens now days)
Younger kids are just being kids. We are removing the social bonding that takes place naturally IMO. Most of us over 35 grew up without these rules, and I think we all turned out pretty good.0 -
the rule makers will keep making BS rules until we all stand up and say enough. (like that will ever happen) when this older generation is gone the rule makers will have there way and the country will be doomed. all we can do is try to teach our children some common sense right from wrong and what bs looks like and hope for the best. look how much has changed in the past 40 years what will it be like in another 40? more high tec gadgets and alot less common sense[:(] my .02 0 -
