Auction starting bids??

Just curious, I have my eye on a few rifles. On the couple auction sites for firearms I have noticed some sort of a trend. Seems folks are putting a start price higher than the companys suggested retail.

For example, I have looked at a rifle on the manufacturers site. Says suggested retail $1139.00. I goto a few sites and these same rifles are starting at over $1250.00 . I have also noticed alot of these auction not selling or getting any bids.

But why would you price it higher than suggested retail, that is easily found online.

I can see if it is a limited number of firearms being made once and never again. The guns in question are just run of the mill nothing special or unlimited amount made.

    oh geesh, here we go again. and its alway the new guy![:p][xx(]congrats, you just touched on one of the top 10 most common questions on gb forums!

    one of the reasons is guns advertised on webs are priced based on area of country. a 1000.00 gun in conn, may sell for 1500.00 in california due to cost of living in those geographic locations.

    I think they just hope that some sucker comes along and didn't bother
    searching online, and will just up and buy it...which will
    occasionally happen, I'm sure.

    Hey, there is a gun on GB that has been listed at a rediculous price for over two years. (ain't that right, Duckhunter?)
    The reason? No listing fees, so the same stuff stays on there forever.
    As in "relist until sold"

    As others have said, no listing fee is a no lose prop. for a guy that dreams of a sucker. As P.T. said - "there is one born every minute"... or something like that.

    Just skate by those ads and you will find something reasonable. Stay here long enough and you will find some real bargins.

    post a link to this over priced rifle.

    I have a hard time beleiving people try to sell stuff for more then the MSRP.

    there has to be more to the auction, like extras or an upgrade.

    Many dealers use GB to offer new items at retail and sometimes a little more. If you live where guns are readily available these auctions won't interest you. I used to live in a small town where the nearest decent gun shop was a 2 hour drive away. There was a home-based FFL in town who could order a new gun from one of these sellers. That's likely their market.

    In a free market system sellers can ask whatever they think they can get and buyers can purchase or keep looking as they wish.

    Regretfully, there are more sleazebag sellers on the auction side than you can shake a stick at. Fortunately, there are also a large volume of really good sellers to help with the imbalance. The same overpricing thing happens on all the other auction sites too. Remember, there's a sucker born every minute. They're just hoping that sucker visits their auctions. [;)]

    i think your right that a gun might be worth more in certain areas, but its just like anything somebody is trying to hook that wide eyed sucker into something overpriced. Thats the problem with auction, gun shows, etc. You can rarely find a good deal anymore, you either get scammed or pay the same price you would in a store.

    Keep searching the auctions and reading the shameless plugs the forum members post. I will guarantee you will find a super bargain sooner or later. I have found a few.

    2 recent ones I have been looking at. I wont post links but name the guns here.
    Sig556 suggested retail is 1299.95 on their web page. They have listed starting as high as 1500.00 on here and a few other sites
    The other rifle a PTR-91 (HK-91 clone by JLD) the standard rifle sug. retail $1140.00 . I have seen alot of these startiing at 1250-1300.00 .

    I understand its a supply and demand thing. But I would figure that most sellers would rather move the rifle at a decent price. Instead they have to relist it 100 times

    I purchased a HK-91 with bipod, goodies, and extra mags not long ago for 1600 off of GB. Keep looking.

    If the price is too hig then don't bid. Go back to what I said about it being free market.

    Thanks for the good wishes Doug, but I don't have any kids and my father is deceased so this is just another Sunday to me.

    We are supposed to refrain from complaining about auctions so I will lock this since there really isn't anywhere left to go with it.
