Antique Collectors Disease: Anyone Else Have It?

Hi, my name is Jeff and I am addicted to collecting all things antique.

Seriously, I am an incurable collector of epic proportions. In addition to a bazillion guns, many antique, I am plagued with hordes of:

Pocket knives
Pocket watches
Sheath knives
Antique oak furniture
Antique books
Antique oil lamps
Antique, slag glass electric lamps
Antique smoking collectibles, i.e. ashtrays and matchsafes (vesta and wall)
Antique chromolithograph prints
Antique oil paintings
Antique radios
Antique beer steins
Antique ABP cut glass
Antique art pottery
The list continues....

Oops, how could I forget....Antique clocks out the pazinga.

I really need help, or at least someone to commiserate with me so I don't feel so damn alone in my addiction.[}:)][:o)][:I]

Is there anyone out there who is drawn to old things?

Well, I know most of you sorry b-astards have to work tomorrow, but I am taking the week off. So, into one of my antique ABP cut glass tumblers goes three ice cubes and about three fingers of good Cuervo "Tradicional" 100% Agave, Reposado Tequila and I am settling into my man-cave with all my antiques for a bit of net surfing.[:D]

    I do like antiques. Just recently acquired a 1929 Duncan Fiffe double drop leaf and four chair set beautifully refinished.

    I have an old victor box record player in sad shape
    Is it worth anything? I almost got tired of tripping over it and threw it out.

    You can't even walk through our house.
    We collect:
    Bakelite (Gambling stuff, salt and peppers, kitchenware and just about anything else made of Bakelite).
    Limited edition and original art
    Glassware (wifes deal)
    Sterling silver belt buckles

    My wife likes to do flea markets (She's a vendor), so we always have a truckload of stuff sitting around.
    Anybody need a minature buggy (100 years old)? We have it.[:D]

    [:D][:D][:D]Funny chit! That is the difference between cheap Tequila with a bunch of additives such as Cuervo Gold -vs- a good, 100% agave Tequila, taken neat, or on the rocks, sans any mixer.[;)]

    I have looked it up before but don't remember right now.
    It was my wifes Dads toy when He was a kid and he just turned 80.

    It still winds up and rolls along ringing a bell as it goes and turns from side to side. It will travel about 8' before needing a rewind.

    Took the liberty of a quick look in a reference book I have. Found what looks like your toy listed as "Kiddy, or Kiddie Cyclist", Circa 1930, valued in the $300.00 range. If correct, it is a Marx mechanical toy.

    I collect and restore old fountain pens and pencils. The wife thinks I should get rid of some since I have over 1000. It isn't going to happen.

    I had the desease but got the cure!, After a while things just become objects that are not used and collect dust. Now investment quality goods are another story. I concentrate mainly on guns, not antiques though as that is a limited marked and finding someone willing to pay for them is tough at least where I live. Good quality modern guns are my investments. Not thought of as collecting but of investing in something I can get a better return on than using the bank.

    I understand the concept and think it is a wise move to invest in something.

    Don't for a minute think that most of my antiques are "junk". I have many items that have a very good resale value and a goodly number that have "great" value, particularly in the gun, furniture, pocket watch, clock, slag lamp, oil painting, art pottery and beer stein areas. [;)]

    The internet made in much easier to market antiques, particularly the smaller items, such as high quality steins, lamps, art pottery and watches.

    I to still have some valuable "Junk" laying around.. I just dont chase it like I used to, As I said mostly guns only now.. Still have around 75 pocket knives from the 20 and 30s, some good Beer Steins, and a few watches.

    I still repair old doubled ended switchblades from Schrade, winchester, remington, Case, ETC. Those are where the real money is in antique knives..

    I really hate to leave anything behind that people are gonna fight over...[:0][:D][:D][:D][:D]

    Working on a full set of two patterns of depression glass and one of elegant glass. Some antique pottery jugs, bowls and pitchers. Japanese lusterware bird salt and peppers. First edition, first printings of Tony Hillerman, ditto the Bob Lee Swagger books. I also have more knives than I will ever use, and a variety of collections within the Indian arts category. Did I mention carved wooden reptiles and amphibians by a single wood carver.

    I am kwel though, not all of those things are antique.

    I was being cocky, thinking that your collection had nothing on mine, then you had to go and hit me with the hydrant. Well, you got me there. That is one item I have not started to collect, yet.

    Pretty nice hydrant. Where did you get it? Do they have more? How much would one cost me? Do you want to sell yours?[}:)][}:)][}:)][:D]

    The hydrant was a Christmas gift from my daughter and son in law. My son in law is a retired fire fighter and my daughter is currently a captain on the Topeka fire department. I know you were kidding, but no it's not for sale. Besides, the thing weighs close to 200#s and would be a shipping nightmare.

    It just did my heart good to see that there were more people with my accumulating afliction.[;)]

    Sounds like you raised her right! By the way, beautiful stuff and a beautiful room.

    You are not alone in your affliction Sir. Someday, I will borrow my sons digital and try to figure out how to post some pics of guns and antiques. You will be amazed I assure you.[;)]
