Now, the powers that be tell me that in March, we will be changing to a 12-hour workday. You know how sometimes someone will say one thing, and it sound like something else? To me, "You will be working a 12-hour shift," sounds like, "RETIRE! GET THE HECK OUT OF HERE!"

I didn't like the idea of 12 hour shifts either, until we went to them back in 1988. Since I've been on 12's, I have to say they are absolutely great. Lots of days off during the week where you can go fishing, and not have all the knuckleheads on the water. Time to get all your other running around done. Use 2 days of leave, and be off a week. Great shift.0 -
Is there a college nearby? Maybe you can get a gig with the campus police. Very quiet, relatively safe (for police work) and there's usually only one guy on the 3rd shift because the place is closed and not much happens. Most of the personnel work days.
BTW, is there any way mods can be given the ability to block a user from posting in case of future escapades like last night? Better than locking the whole thing and spoiling it for the rest of us.0 -
I also work twelves. 3 on 3 off. Every set of three on fly, then I get a three day weekend.
I enjoy it, accept for the nights.[xx(]0 -

When I do the backup foreman job, I do 12's. It's great when things are going good. When things are going bad, there is no moral in those last 4 hours to solve problems. It's more about making it through the shift. I don't see an increase in production because of it.
Having said that, my wife wishes she had it, but their contract forbids any 12 hour shifts. My brother in law does 13.5 hour shifts to make it to 40 hours a week as a 911 operator. Same hours and days every week. He likes it.0 -
BTW- I used to work 14 hour shifts when I was a truck driver. I worked Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. Totaled 42 hours per week and had two weekends each week. [:D]
I liked it for the first 10 years or so but as got I into my late 30s those days started feeling loooong. That's why I went back to school because I knew I couldn't drive much longer.0
