Drinking a 12 pack every night is most definitely alcoholism. How he managed to just quit... I dont know. Maybe his wife threatened to leave him? Given enough motivation, most people can break any habit.

I will drink beer for a while and then stop for a while. I also did the same with smoking. I would smoke 2 packs a day then stop all together. I have not had the withdrawals. I may just be strange. Don

Know the difference between an alcoholic and a drunk ?
Alcoholics go to meetings and drunks don't.

i drank at least a Qt. of liquor a night for 5 or 6 years then switched to at least 12 beers per night during the week. on weekends i would drink 2-4 cases each day on the weekends. i stayed drunk for over 18 years, and one day i quit and haven't had or wanted any type beer or liquor since 1989. i don't know why but it didn't bother me. i also smoked for over 30 years and quit cold turkey and that hasn't bothered me either.

I define alcoholism differently from the dr's who regurgitate a text book definition. If you NEED alcohol,...especially having to have it in the morning to get going, and have to keep it in locations in secret from others,..then yes you are an alcoholic. If you drink 12 beers a day by choice, but maintain yours as well as others safety while doing so, but can simply leave it with no DT's or crazy need to have it (using household substitutes) then you are a drinker who exceeds the limit of what the medical community would suggest. I am well past what a dr would call healthy in my daily consumption,...but when I go places with family or just don't have access to it for a day or two,..I don't feel the need to go find it. I like beer,..thats what I tell the dr.

Drinking a quart of beer a day, or the equivlalent, is an alcoholic. Everyone has the Serotonin I molecule. A few years back some reaserch showed that alcoholics have Serotonin II, There are no brain receptors for Serotonin II so it just flows around in the blood. When alcohol is added the Serotonin II molecule connects with the alcohol molecule which can then can plug in to the brain. Non-alcoholics get drunk, but alcoholics get drugged. Because of the way the subconcious works, if one continues to get drunk the brain responds by creating Seritonin II because that is how the subconsious interprets what one wants. Many people are born with Serotonin II, others aquire it. The body of an alcoholic produces more Serotonin today than it did yesterday and more yesterday than the day before that, etc. Now the disclaimer. It has been years since I read the report. So if the correct word is not Serotonin please let me know and then the correct word can be inserted.

That is a theory, completely unproven. If we knew what makes individuals susceptable to alcoholism we could prevent it.

Also, saying that drinking a quart of beer a day makes a person an alcoholic is simply wrong.

Old Fool, What part is theory? testing the blood for Serotonin II? Finding that there are no brain receptors for Serotonin II, but there are for alcohol? Molecular combining of the two, that then plug into the brain receptors? Daily increased production of Serotonin? People born with Serotonin II and some people producing it later in life? Those are not theories just science. As for the quart of beer a day. People who drink a quart of beer a day have the same abnormality of their nervous system as those who drink a fifth a day. That's science also.

I suspect that asking if a 6-pac before going to work (just to steady me nerves) is a rhetorical question.

I refuse to admit that I have an alcohol problem. I do, however, have a police problem!
