Yes, Memorial Day. Took the ATV out back in the woods to my favorite spot, a "gorge" about 25 feet deep and around 100 feet wide with a stream running through it. No one around as per usual, nice and quiet. Here I sat for a while thinking back over 60 years when as a replacement for a Infantry company I was assigned to for the rest of the war and the people I met during this time. Some names a bit fuzzy, some real clear. Depending on how long I knew them. This Infantry Division had over 26,000 battle casualties with over 3,000 KIA included in this figure from a (full strength which we never had) of 15,000 men. I thank God that I was among the lucky ones and recall many good friends I lost. After a while I returned for our family cookout later, and again, let my "selective memory" alone and joined the crowd. How true, "Freedom is not free". I know damn well .
