VJ Day Anniv. Today
Today is the date that the unconditional surrender by the Japanese was announced. Just goes to show that something good came out of the use of nukes.
My dad (a soldier in WW2) and wouldn't have anything Japanese in the house. He was convinced that he wouldn't have made it through the invasion of the Japanese homeland and the A bomb was a life saver.

Your dad was right - the A-bombs saved a whole hell of a lot of both American and Japanese lives and preserved the Japanese nation as we know it. Had we gone the convnetional route, Japan, like Korea and Germany, would have been divided betweeen us and the Soviets and Lord knows what that would have done. 0 -

Be very careful posting such. You will invite an attack. [;)]0 -
My deceased Dad would be real upset.. GM has moved out of the town he worked for 31 yrs in and 15K jobs gone. Mom drives a Toyota. 0 -
This is why we mashed tin cans, saved bacon grease, used ration stamps, bought war bonds and grew victory gardens.
Here are two Honolulu 8/15/1945 newspapers that my dad sent back.

Well...
It was not an unconditional surrender. The Japanese demanded that we allow them to keep the institution if the Emporer before they would surrender.
We yielded to their demand, and they then surrendered.
They still have their Emporer.

I was on a 5 day R&R pass in Paris France at the time from Fulda Germany where our Infantry Batalion was stationed. Was riding in the Metro (subway) and noticed a lot of yelling and talk. A newspaper had just been brought on and saw the headlines. FINNE LE GUERRE (?). What a wide open town with celibrations for a while. Mainly it meant we would not be going to Japan and I most likely would be heading home. I had enough of war to last me having been a Infantryman in several campaigns
in the ETO. God Bless Harry Truman for O.K.'ing the use of the A Bomb.0
