money,money, money, money....
At one time in our Country, individual banks and, I think, municipalities, as well as other entities, issued their own currency. I'm pretty sure this happened during the Great Depression (and during the period of our Manifest Destiny).
Could this still be done, without the risk of immediate imprisonment??
Maybe sorta like barter ??
I'm seriously curious about this.

If I remember correctly it was the Great Depression that put an end to this issue of so called National Bank Notes, simply because the U.S. Treasury wanted to be the only game in town when it came to money. 0 -

I'd say they are playing it smart because the way things are going the Peso is going to be worth as much or more than the Dollar.0 -
Sunshine Mines made a 1 troy oz silver round (coin) a few years back. They are about the size of a silver dollar but a little thicker. If the world of paper money ever collapsed these would be worth having. Paper would still be worth having if you needed to wipe your butt!

The US Government has a monopoly on currency. It wasn't all that long ago that citizens were not even allowed to own gold. 0 -
In 1964 LBJ made a statement that "silver has become too valuable to use for money".
The Federal Reserve controls the value of our money. Big mistake? They made the great depression worse by their actions.

and the Federal reserve were started by and still is mostly owned by private interests...
I think i recall.
and now they make sure that nobody else can do what they themselfe did once upon a time0 -
it must be that they don't allow other currency, because they want to avoid having the value of the dollar go down the toilet. or influenced by some large bank.
probbaly, "e-currency" would have to be in the denomination of the US dollar and in actuality just be a money transfer service, like a credit card or GayPal.0 -
Doug: Having lived through the whole depession of '29 I never saw anything other than American curency used. Possibly in some "Company
Towns" such as coal mining towns with "Company Stores" but not were I
lived. However "barter" was widely used and accepted for a lot of things in farming and fishing towns here.0
