Funny how so many that have never served have all the answers to all the questions about military operations. They call them politicians instead of soldiers.[^]0 -

If you think that only military men know what combat is like, I would suggest you talk to some residents of Stalingrad, Dresden, Hiroshima, Berlin, Nagasaki, or any of a mulitude of cities that have been flattened by war.
Civvies can and do have valid views on war and whether they should or should not be fought.
Iran is a war that does not need to be fought. Iraq is a war that is being fought badly. If we poured the money that we are wasting on useless wars into research, we could have an alternative to oil and that sandy patch of s*** wouldn't matter anymore.
But like EMM said, some people just want to live vicariously because as much as they b**** and moan about war being hell, they can't get enough of it.0 -

You're taking your grandkids to Six Flags. And while that's a warzone unto itself, it's nowhere near Iraq.
Your actions speak about as loudly as my words and I could say I'd put my life on the line just as much as you would - but until I do it, it's just words, isn't it?

I never bought that BS about "if you weren't there, man, you don't understand."
If others cannot be made to understand, then what is the point of veterans opening their mouths about the subject at all? Unless they like the sounds of their own voices, that is.
We listen to tales to hopefully learn from them. And the lesson I have learned, that so many seem to miss, is that war is not a football game.
I've known too many good people who, but for the grace of God, would have died far from home. That is not something I ask lightly of anyone as I myself have not ever been in that situation.
So if I am to endorse a course of action that will cause sons and daughters to grow up without their fathers, for wives to sleep alone in their beds remembering only with heartache the days when they had someone to say goodnight to, then it will be for a damned good reason. The wars I want, for lack of a better phrase, are ones for which the existence of this nation, her institutions, and her way of life are under dire threat.
Iran does not pose that. It is a situation conjured up by politicians to salve their own egos and divert attention away from real problems.
Bush wants a war to divert attention from the other war, the crashing economy, and illegal immigration.
Ahmandinejad is talking out of his @$$ to divert attention away from Iran's crumbling infrastructure, rising crime rate, and plummeting economy.
And as Iran lacks the ability to attack us, it would be up to us to initiate hostilities on Iranian soil.
And I will be damned before I advocate the loss of one American life there over causes as idiotic as the aforementioned.
As is, I have no idea when the preservation of our military might and the lives of men and women in uniform became so unpatriotic. I'm not so greedy and self-centered as to ask them to put their lives in harm's way over every perceived threat just because I'm feeling paranoid that day.0 -

John, I've seen Marines who were fresh out of boot camp and gungho fold like a sheet in the first firefight. No one knows what they do until they do it.0 -

The worst I've seen deals directly with some close friends of mine - the boy they raised and loved for 13 years (they took him away from an abusive mother and drug-addicted father) joined the Army right out of high school and immediately cut all ties with them. He talks to his maternal grandmother all the time, but he hasn't even written them in over three years.
That is way worse, in my opinion, than folding under combat.
As for myself, I have no doubt I'd be one of the folks to fold under fire - I'm no hero and talk more than I do, if you catch my drift.[;)]0 -

Maybe the boy needs it this way until he can heal some wounds. Time will do wonders for that.
Don't bet that you would fold under fire. Just as some big men have, some peaceful souls have turned out to be the toughest fighters in history.
Like I said, no one knows until they do it, and no one can judge which ones will recat in which way. I could tell you stories that would shock the pants off of you.0 -

As an aside... there have been no terrorist attacks on our soil since 9/11. Think anything might accidentally be working ??
I think I've earned the right to speak. I am an Army vet, and I've volunteered to my government to serve again. They say I'm too old. I also have four Sons who are combat vets, one still serving and two who have been awarded the Bronze Star.
Yeah, I have the right to speak.

Prison stretch, hell, that would have been like heaven compared what I went through as a PFC Infantry Rifleman in the ETO through several campaigns with the Infantry Div (3rd) that had the highest combat casualties of any division in the ETO and the PTO. Nice warm prison cell with 3 meals a day, books to read, visitors and all the goodies of life dont sound bad. No cold wet foxhole with cold C and K rations, being shot at and returning fire to stay alive, seeing friends killed at a alarming rate plus the wounded friends trying to stay alive.
Somehow you dont seem to have youre head screwed on tight guy. You are talking to the wrong guy about a "prison stint" and fighting for ones country. Try it sometime when the spirit moves you. Otherwise
