Gun Owners in America!
During my recent trip back to visit family in Ohio, Indiana, and Kansas I took a little survey of the Brothers, Sisters, Nieces and Uncles.
My sister owns a 38 special. Never has shot it and is not involved in any sports or gun organizations.
My brother does not own a gun.
My uncle owns a gun but does not shoot or belong to any gun organization.
My Cousin in KS and her husband own two guns, she hates guns and he was a shooter at one time, he hides the guns and never shoots and does not belong to any organization.
My other three nieces in Ohio and Indiana are married and one of the husbands is a bow hunter and owns a gun. None of them belong to any gun organizations.
My point in all this is I believe that the majority of gun owners are just that, Gun Owners only. They may have a gun tucked away in the closet but they don't shoot and don't know what a gun organization is. The want to have the gun for protection but probably could not find the gun or the bullets in time to help in the event of a home invasion.
So our little group of hunters, collectors, and target shooters is pretty small, I believe. Maybe as many as 25 million, say 1/3 of all gun owners.
I don't think the folks who have the guns in the closet will lift a finger to vote in favor of gun ownership and would hand in the guns in a New York Minute!
What is your personal experience with your family and do you agree with my assessment??

My father owns guns, but no longer hunts or shoots for enjoyment. He also does not belong to an organization. My brother owns guns, and is an avid hunter. He does not shoot for enjoyment, and does not belong to any organization that I know of.

I own several guns myself. I also go out and shoot frequently. But I do not belong to an orginazation. My mother owns a few guns also, and she goes out and shoots a little. I think you might be right about the voting issue. 0 -
I think you are spot-on in your observation. The vast majority of Americans fall into several broad categories relative to guns.
Category #1. Liberals and other gun fearing/gun hating folk. Mainly against the idea of regular citizens owning, much less carrying guns. Feel the police and military are here to protect them from....something. Zero concept of, or a deliberate disregard of, Amendment II and the US Constitution in general. Look upon it as "outdated" and "flexible".
Category #2. Generic gun owners and general conservatives. These folk are ok with citizens owning guns, but are uncomfortable with the thought of unrestricted access to and carrying of guns by citizens. They may have a gun for protection, or more likely, hunting, mostly never used. They have a fuzzy, vague concept of the existence of the US Constitution, but don't understand it, and/or are not passionate about it. This group will go along with gun laws and confiscations if presented.
Category #3. This is my group. Can include persons from any part of the political spectrum, but are primarily, libertarian minded and hard conservatives/conservatarians. Gun owning, gun using, gun loving. Alert, wary of the Fed, stay up on current event and politics. Keep a very watchful eye on any move to restrict individual freedoms and liberties. Excellent understanding of the US Constitution and the intent of the founding fathers. Some in this group are ready, willing and able to step up if needed, in the event the SHTF in any number of scenarios.
Category #4. The enemies of America and of freedom and liberty in general. These are your willful, deliberate, scheming One-World govt types. Unknown personal motivations and unknown placement in general society. Mostly in political office, government bureaucrats, the mega corporate world, diplomats, officers on large Boards and Foundations etc. These are the real danger and the real enemy.
The remaining categories, barring group #3, are an annoyance, a facilitating group, or a general waste of skin.0 -
Just went shooting today. My wife, daughter, son in law and two grandkids. We went through almost a full brick of 22, 200 rounds of 7.62x39, 150 rounds of .223, 100 rounds of 9mm, 200 rounds of 45 acp and 60 rounds of 357.
I do agree with Sig232, most are just gun owners and rarely shoot what they own. It's up to us to get people involved in shooting, especially the youngsters.
I changed two guys I work with from "guns are ok but I've never messed with them much" into shooting 2 or 3 times a month.

My dad has more than a few and I would say in general has gotten board with shooting and has no interest in cleaning them or dealing with them afterward. They're just there and he has never belonged to any organization.
He has strong opinions against the antis, halfway keeps up with what's going on, but takes no action.
I would say your assumptions could be quite accurate. Especially the idea of only 1/3 of us that are making any impact at all. That is pretty scary.0 -
My "Dad" (otherwise known as the guy who got Mom pregnant and who I almost never see) I think is pretty reflective of the average gun owner.
He has a shotgun in his closet. The reason for having it in the first place is unclear, since it is taken apart and no ammo for it is in the house. It hasn't been fired, let alone cleaned, in several years.
He owns one "deer rifle" (a .270, I think) which he uses on his once-yearly deer hunt, which is coincidentaly the only time I see him most years.
He is a committed democrat, and not a "blue dog" dem either. He thinks my stance on gun rights and the 2nd Ammendment borders on insanity.
Now that I think about it, maybe its a good thing he wasn't around......0 -
I find category #2 (above) to be the biggest threat to our rights on the local level.
See..owning guns and 'belonging to an gun organization' means diddly-squat..if you support gun control.
Fact is...you give aid, comfort, and cover to the enemy...you actually advance an agenda..(covered under # 4, above)..(thanks,lt496)
that you willfully remain ignorant of.
Then...the enemy uses YOUR support of various and sundry traitorous slime-bags in the political arena to futher advance THEIR private agenda.0
