FAL question
Does anybody own one of these or have experience with one? I've noticed that for a gun that was very popular at one time, it isn't discussed much or given the same status as the M14 or the AR or AK. Is there a reason why? I've heard that they're not very accurate.

What is a good fal to buy, or better yet what ones not to buy. Been looking at them the prices range from 500 to 2000 for clones. thanks 0 -
They were never really meant to be match rifles so precision accuracy probably wasn't a goal but I wouldn't call them inaccurate. They were intended to shoot people out to 300 meters and they will do that just fine.
I have a Belgian made FAL that I bought in 1986 (20 years already? Wow) and I like it. It feels and handles better than either the H&K or the AR but that's subjective and not all will agree. Mine has been 100% reliable with any ammo. I have no experience with any of the clones so I can't comment on them.0 -

I had a clone(Enterprise Arms L1A1). I did not like the way it shot, but it was made out of a bucket of parts. Some kit or something.0 -
Great guns, but heavy. I've got several AK's and AR's but he FAL is special. Larger caliber really sets it apart from the AR/AK.
I don't see how the "skinnys" humped this big rifle around or fired it on full auto.

Handles better then the 14/Garand/91 breed of rifles...easier to work on, and far easier to clean.
Unless you have one of the 1500 buck 'target' battle rifles...it generally will outshoot the line rifles.
I expect that if one bought one of the 500 dollar parts rifles and put another 1000 in it...the Fal would shoot right along with any of 'em..
Mine will hold on a silhouite(sp) target right out to 600 yards...
Comparing the AK/AR to this rifle is comparing apples to horse dung...neither shoot a bullet good for much other then varmint hunting...0 -
I've got an Imbel (Brazilian) and like it quite a lot. I've never had any problems out of the 500+ rounds I have put through it. I like it much more then any of the three AR's I've owned in the past. Plus it's a .308![^] 0 -

There are 2 basic variations - inch and metric. Cosmetics are the main difference, and mags. Inch guns can use metric mags, although they may be wobbly or not function the best, metric guns can only use metric mags. Inch patterns are known as SLRs, L1A1, etc. Metrics are usually known as STG58.
They can be very accurate too - Below is a somewhat rapid fire group out of mine at 100 yards, 11 shots in about 15 seconds, wiht cheap surplus ammo from Venezuala ("cavim" - not highly regarded). The white box in the red box is 1 inch x 1 inch.0 -
I have one. I like it. It's heavy and very loud. It will also bruise my shoulder, but I really like it. Mines a DSA. I wish I knew more about it. It seems to be a very well built and it's very simple to clean. 0 -

I think it's about the same. Maybe just a little bit less. I find myself gritting my teeth with both and both will leave bruises. I'm not afraid of recoil, but I will be the first to admit I like shooting 22's better. But I love the way things a like full pop can go up when you hit it with one of these guns. It makes me smile just thinking about it.0 -
I also have one and like it very much. No heavier than the M-14 I packed around in Army basic. Of course, I was 39 years younger then. [:(] 0 -
I like the FAL better than the AK as the .308 is superior to the 7.62x39. Mine is mostly Israeli with a Century receiver. I haven't shot it a lot due to time and ammo prices, but it functions well enough. Very heavy to carry around though, you need that handle. 0 -
I have a CAI version I like a lot. In order to get it shootable I had to dump a lot of their crap [like the beautiful Bell and Carlson thumbhole stock[:0][V]]
As of this date I have it down as a project gun-new barrel,new gas piston and tube etc. etc.0 -

I have a century, a friend just got a G1 on a DCI reciever. I need to put a scope on mine to really see what it can do. I honestly expect 2 minute groups with some ammo (maybe not others...). What sold me on it was the adjustable gas system. My friend got one for the same reason, but when he shot mine the light bulb really switched on.
They can be very accurate, and match versions used to be made and imported here into the US, and you can still find 'em on the auctions. Or have one made. Green Mountain makes the barrels for Century (compliance part), I'm sure wtih some $$ they can do the match treatment on one for you on the side....
As far as status vs. AR/M16, etc. it was the chosen rifle for 90+ countries. The Right Arm of the Free World.0 -

The bottom rifle is a HK clone...a radically different rifle...and inferior to the FAL. Wrinkled up sheet metal is not my idea of a rifle action...
Those talking about the weight of the Fal....they weigh about the same as the M-14...and don't handle like a boat paddle, like the 14.0 -

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. You ask what is the differance between my two rifles.
The black one is a Fal copy while the green one is a G3(HK91) copy. Both are 308. The Fal is gas operated, the G3 is a delayed blow back.I think it's the big brother to the MP-5.
The Fal tips open like a AR. The G3 comes apart in 3 pieces(receiver, stock and trigger group) when you remove two pins by the grip.
I think the G3 is more accurate. It's the base rifle for the PSG-1.
Both are heavy, both kick the about the same.
I like the FAL a little better.0 -
Are you holding those rifles tightly into your shoulder...and just riding the recoil ? Not trying to come across as a know-it-all..you may have 50,000 rounds of experience..but sometimes folks will fight the 'kick'; instead of working with it. 0 -

I hold them tight on my shoulder. I'm just not a big girl. I usually get bruised shoulders after a few shots. If you have any tips, I'm all ears. I would like to be able to handle harder kickers. Right now I draw the line a 12gauges.0 -
Past recoil pads.
They come in several grades...get the Magnum version. They slip on sorta like a shoulder holster...and allow me to shoot a 7 pound 340 Weatherby Mag, 250 gr. at 3000 FPS with some degree of comfort.
That round generates several times the foot pounds of recoil then the 308.
Generally, a good tight grip on the weapon will help...and if shooting off a bench, the lower the body is, the more punishment your body takes.
In other words...a standing position will allow the rifle to recoil up and away from the body...
If you can arrange it,a rifle rest for the standing position will help you with recoil.
You WILL toughen up to the recoil, if you can shoot regularly.0 -
In yalls honest opinion,Is an FAL rifle an appropriate first build for a person with average mechanical skills and no gunsmithing experience or tools?The "market" of the different kits,rcvrs,FFL requirements etc. is VERY confusing.All input is appreciated. 0 -
Given that you have a spare 3 grand to drop on one rifle...I suppose an original is appropriate to buy.
However, 6-7 hundred bucks will replace it with one that is only a bit less reliable...assuming that one is the slightest mechanical..
As mentioned above..FNfiles is a good place to do a bit of research on building a rifle.0
