"Must have" Cleaning products
This bolt action will be my first decent centerfire rifle. I have Sweet's 762 among other cleaning supplies. Should I keep the sweets away from the new Savage, or it is a good solvent?
I have a bunch of Hoppes #9, but never feel like the bore is completely clean when I use it. And usually it isn't. I'll take sweets down the barrel after a wet hoppes patch comes out clean, and get more residue.
Is Butch's Boreshine worth the money?
What do you all use? I'm not interested in the foaming products.

I use Hoppes #9 as aftershave. that stuff gives me a woody. 0 -
I use Hoppes or Blue Wonder, and then oil. 0 -
cubslover.......I use Hoppe's #9 and have for 100 years. But, to clean the bore, I use Blue Wonder Gun Cleaner. It really works well.

My personal preference is to swab the bore with a Bore Snake. Then I run at least three patches of Hoppes #9 through the bore. Then I swab with the bore snake again. I then soak a few patches with CLP and run it through the bore and remove MORE after I thought I got it all with the Hoppes #9. Then I remove all the oil from the bore with patches and the bore snake.
How critical is it to get a bore absolutely spotless every single time you shoot it? I wouldn't think it would matter all that much. Everything I've read and have been told that too many aggressive bore cleaners and mechanical scrubbing devices can do more harm than good.0 -
be carefull with sweets,...do not mix it in the bore (always dry patch before changinf to or from sweets). Follow the directions carefully and DO NOT allow it to dry in the bore. Always heavily apply oil after sweets.
When it is all gone,...use Montana Extreme 50BMG copper solvent which is just as powerful,..but infused with oils that will not allow it to etch the steel and can be left for extended periods of time.
one day when you want to experiment, buy some Wipe-Out and let it sit overnight. You will see a huge amount of copper running out of the muzzle. It is the best product I have used for removal of copper fouling.

A BORE GUIDE and a solvent port for it
nylon or bronze brushes,..nylon doesn't dissolve in bore solvent

Brake Cleaner...regular automotive brake cleaner. It cuts through carbon and copper better than anything on the market, and the only thing you have to keep it away from is a wood stock. 0 -

...he he...Ive accumulated a multitude of cleaners. Hoppe's, G.I. Juice, Butches, etc. and etc.
For older milsurp rifles (and modern you tend to shoot a lot) I found info on a DC bore cleaner. I adapated an AC to DC transformer to replace the batts. Simple to make, does not harm the barrel and you would be SUPRISED at the crap that it cleans from an old war horse!..or any bore. Here's a link to a batt operated one...but a AC to DC adapter w/alligator clips soldered to the neg/pos wires of the adapter takes the place of the batts and is much easier to use, and more compact. My adapter happened to be an adjustable voltage...goes up to 7v...I don't run it up past 4.5v though. Try it, works really really good.
Good for that .22 you shoot the snot out of too,...there is so much crap down in the grooves that you cant see, even though it looks super clean, it's not...[;)]

the 22-250 was much more expensive to reload and was more cartridge than I need.
I ordered a 6.5-20x50 scope yesterday. I'll be picking up the rifle sometime in the next few days.0 -
Always used Remington cleaners but went to Blue Wonder and haven't turned back. That stuff is really nice, works very well. 0 -
Got one of those too. Accurate, easy to find ammo, can reload should you choose, low recoil so Tori can shoot it, etc., etc. Now check out this site for cleaning products

The Otis kits are very handy and I like them alot. As for bore cleaner I have grown fond of Butch's Boreshine, stuff works great.

Want that bore to last...take the jointed cheapy aluminum bore rods and use them for punches...and buy a one piece ball bearing handled rod.
Your barrel will thank you....0
