Modern Marvels
Did anyone watch Modern Marvels last night on Discovery...the episode about traps? It was pretty good until the last segment. They went to New Orleans and followed a group around that traps feral cats. They have run wild in the city since Katrina. They use the hav-a-hart type live traps. I figured, "Great. Someone is doing something to rid the city of that menace. Better to be humanely put to sleep than to live like they are." Guy even said that the huge majority of these cats had never had human contact, had survived for years, in some instances, on their own instincts, and could not be rehabiliated to be owned as pets. So what do they do with them? Take them to a shelter, put them to sleep, give them a flea dip, spay or neuter them, and RELEASE THEM BACK INTO THE CITY! WHY??? Why not put them to "sleep"? I am not for harming animals at all, but do not understand what they are doing. They are feral cats for gosh sakes! Of course, they interviewed some people with the SPCA and PETA that LOVED what was happening. I just can't figure this one out!

They needs all the feral cats to keep the mouse population down. Don't want to spread the bubonic plague and get blamed for another white republican caused crisis in New Orleans. 0 -
We had a feral cat in the yard. He'd eat the food we left for him but wouldn't let us get near him. He'd hiss and dart around and not get close.
Then he got so sick he could hardly move. We took him to the vet, they had to put him on an IV. They weren't sure if he'd make it or not.
After that he was a real sweety, a lap cat. He lives in the house now. Dumb animal, huh? He knew who had saved his bacon.
Point is, I don't believe that they couldn't be tamed- but releasing them again is pointless. Far CHEAPER to the taxpayer or whoever is funding their organization to do that than perform surgery!0 -
The idea is that if you just kill the cat a new one will come in and reoccupy the territory, but if you neuter and release,they will defend their territory, but not breed. In time this is supposed to reduce the overall population. It is the latest thing, and according to our local pound, it works.
Feral cats are like coyotes, they breed too fast for just killing them to work.0 -
prolly because they figure if they spay/neuter them, the cat population will go down, and they don't have to kill them.
they do the same thing with a mosquito population, release a bunch of sterile mosquitos so the fertile ones mate with them, but have no offspring.0 -
We like feral cats. They do keep the mouse population thinned pretty good. A momma cat is the best mouser there is! We put out some food to keep em around, but otherwise leave them alone. And the Coyotes keep the cat population thinned out. Over the years we've had ALOT come, stay anywhere from a few week to a few years. Then vanish overnight. Probable coyote dinner.
Only one cat has survived for any length of time. A SMART female that's been around for about 6 years.
Over the years she was slowly tamed and is getting old. So we now let her in the house. Took to the litter box right away!0 -

No, I do like cats. Daughter has two. I do like dogs better though. [:o)] They talked on the show about what a big problem feral cats had become in the city. So I just don't understand the premise of spending the money to catch the cats, put them to sleep to perform surgery, then releasing them back into the city. Guess most of you are right about the rodent problem. That is about the only reason I can think of.0 -
federal .22HPs are $10 for 550 rounds at wally world and a bullet to the head is not inhumane in my opinion. starving a cat sounds more painful and inhumane 0 -
Buschmaster, not really the same thing. Neutred animals do not breed with other animals. Period. 0
