A good read. However I do disagree with this statement:

"But local gun registration presents no obvious constitutional problems. Criminals don't register guns of course; that's the point. Arrest a carful of mopes with guns and no permits and you have a good ipso facto case for throwing the book at them. How much better to approach gun control on a reasonable basis rather than make a religious war out of it."

I am not a big fan of registration. I realize that almost every legal gun purchase leaves a paper trail and that in and of itself is a form of registration, but history has shown us that registration is the first step to taking them away for good.

I concur with you. But at least the guy's got the right idea.

Remember what motivates Americans: if I don't own it, use it, or do it, I couldn't care less. 1 in 6 households contain a gun. 1 in 2 contain a child. It's all about who's ox is being gored, Constitution be damned.

    Thank You Bullzeye,
Some years ago, I read that in the days of the Founding Fathers the word regulated meant to be armed. And "well regulated" meant that one knew how to use his arm well. This meant being able to hit a target, at a standard distance, a certain number of times. Other wise one was just regulated but not accurate enough to be "well". I know I still have the books, and the Senate Judiciary Coommittee - Sub Committee Report on the Right to Bear Arms, etc. I just don't know where they are.
I need to buy a dictionary of that day.

    HandgunHTR52,

I am likewise not a fan of registration - given our politicians' knack for perverting even the most benign and well-intentioned of endeavors for their own selfish ends, registering handguns is just a bad idea.

But as was said, at least he's on our side.

I personally think this article should be made a sticky - it sums up in some very incontrovertible terms why the 2nd Amendment is what it is and anyone who says otherwise truly has no idea what they're talking about.

The problem I have with regulation, is history has shown what it leads to. I'm a law abiding citizen, and if there were no anti gunners out there, I'd have no problem with registration, the fact is though, if there all registerd, sooner or later the anit's are gonna take power, and then take the guns.

    Fatboy,

Agreed. As with the Jews in Germany, registration was just the first step in oppression.

And if anyone's gonna oppress me, there's no way in hell I'm gonna do anything but make them work for it.[;)][8D]

The first ten amendments collectively are commonly known as the Bill of Rights.
The Bill of Rights constitutes the rights of "the people."

To argue that the 2nd is not, is to show true intentions.
To circumvent the constitution without due process.
Resulting in the disarming of "the people" to make way for what is sure to become a totalitarian government.

Yep, all those scholars forgot what all those Amendments meant when the words,"The people" are used.
There are no fewer than 7 times that phrase is used in our Constitution and Bill of Rights, and if "The People" means the National Guard in any of them; I'll join!

I think Warshinton should do a better job regulating speech. Sure, you can speak, but they can regulate it. Perhaps people should have to register there speech. Newspapers need to be permitted. It is a responsibility that the common liberal cannot handle.

quote:For that reason I think even if the amendment had been interpreted more in line with the framers' intent, the regulatory landscape would not necessarily look a lot different from the way it does now. But it's silly to think the framers would guarantee a right in one half of the Second Amendment only to allow the government to unguarantee it in the other half. The man is basically a Zumbo.
No way the Founders would have fought and died in the mud...only to allow a strong central government the power of approving or denying arms to a freeman...and keep lists on top of it.
