POLL Question. WOULD YOU KILL
over your property?
The Taxas man who killed 2 men burglerizing his neighbors home raises some interesting questions as to what extent daedly force is warranted.
The facts as far as I know are not all in yet (IE:released) on the Texas shooting. So I'm not asking for opinions concerning that.
But I assume that the majority of us consider ourselves responsible gunowners and not the armed itchy triggered fanatics the media portrays us as.
So here's the scenerio I want you to consider.
You have arrived home and caught a thief in the act of stealing your prized valueables.
You are armed.
The thief begins to run away and will get away w/your stuff. He has not threatened you or anyone else.
Would you shoot him to prevent him from getting away w/your property?
IMO it's a pretty tough question. I know I'd be tempted.

It really depends on the valuables. I have things that can be replaced. If those are things that he is taking, then no. I also have things that are not replaceable. If that is the case, I may try to "wing" him/her to prevent them from getting away with my stuff. I hesitate to say that I will kill for property alone, because honestly, it really doesn't belong to me at all.
Now, since I have a dog, and to get at my stuff, the thief would have had to incapacitate my dog in some way, and, my dog is like one of my children, if he hurt my dog to get my stuff, he is going to get shot.0 -
If I see someone in my home and I'm armed, I'm shooting him. I won't ask questions as to why he is there. If he's nuts enough to rob, he's probably nuts enough to hurt me. 0 -
I cannot imagine myself saying, "Gee, these guys stole my stuff, which I worked my ass off for, and violated my home, but shucks, it's not worth killing them over."

It all depends on the circumstances. Is he between me and my family? What mental state is he in? Crazed? Drugged? Can I take him out without my weapon? In most states there is no death penalty for theft, so as much as I would like to take him out, shooting would likely result in a very unhappy ending for both of us. Him dead, me at best losing my gun rights for the rest of my life, at worse in prison. I think I am most likely to attempt to detain him without having to fire. If at that point he does decide to pose a threat, then it's time to eliminate the threat. 0 -
Well after thinking long and hard about your question, I would call the cops to come and get the body out of my house. A muder causes immediade pain to your love ones.[V] A theif causes pain to all he touches for the rest of his life.[:(!] Theives go on forever becomeing braver till they use a gun then progress to muder.[xx(] Theives are scum of the earth, They are liken to rapest.[:(!]

It depends greatly on the situation, but for simply stealing stuff, no. If he was armed, I would not risk my life. I'd shoot to wound at first and then to kill if necessary. Taking another person's life should be a last resort. IMO. 0 -

I don't think I would shoot him. But attempt to give chase at a safe distance to see if he lived or had a vehicle nearby. If he got in a car, I'd shoot at it to make easy to ID.
I can relate a true similiar story that happened to me. I was walking home early one morning (2AM) from a local bar when 2 black guys attempted to roll me.
They produced no weapons. Just stopped me and demanded my money. When I refused to give it to them, they attacked me.
During the scuffle, I got hold of one of them w/one arm around his neck and other behind his head. I fully intended to break his neck.
But something came over me and clearly recall a voice saying "Don't Do It!". And I released him.
No more than had I let go, than what sounded like a police siren sounded. And the 2 guys jumped off me and ran away. But when I got up there one one in sight. I was alone on an empty street. Wierd huh?0 -
I don't think I'd shoot to kill him ...OR to try to "wing" him(if I tried that I'd probably put one in his brain pan by accident) ...BUT I'd definitely give chase, and I'd cap afew over his head. Think about it, IF you were a thief, running away with a bunch of somebody's stuff and he was running after you and shooting too, would you continue to hang on to his stuff? ...OR drop it and run as fast as you could? 0 -

I'd like to think I would not shoot but I can easily imagine my emotions overruling logic.

Which brings me back to the story of my attempted mugging. What if I had killed that guy over a few dollars? (I selsom LEFT a bar w/much money). I think everyone gets that "voice" in thier head at such times. But not everyone listens to it. At any rate, in such occasions a COOL HEAD is a MUST.0 -

You would have done society a big favor. You aren't the first guy these scum attacked, and you probably weren't the last. They probably learned from fighting you that they needed a gun next time, and they probably went out and killed some innocent person.0 -
Yes, once he/she enters my house it's fightin time and the gloves are off. If you don't want to get shot then don't break into my house. It's that simple. You never know what that kind of worthless skum is going to do so don't give them a chance to do anything. 0 -

Maybe so. But I have thought long and hard about it and I believe the voice that told me not to was a divine intervention. I fully intended to kill him until I heard the voice loudly and clearly say NOT TO. And what about the siren from the police car that wasn't there that scared them off?
All I'm saying is the decision to kill isn't one to be taken lightly. Perhaps guidence is there to help us decide if we'll listen to it. I'll bet the guy in Texas wishes he had.
The guy I had ahold of knew he was in trouble. When I got ahold of him, he went limp.
Maybe he got scared enough to turn away from crime? I think alot of people get some romantic idea's about killing and end up like the kid in the movie "The Unforgiven".0 -
I would not hesitate to shoot and keep shooting to stop someone from harming me or somebody else. But I don't think I would shoot someone running off (across the yard) with my kid's bike or one of our DVD players.
However, if I caught someone INSIDE my house they would have to prove very quickly and without a doubt they were NOT a threat or get shot. With a loaded gun or two around the house it would be irresponsible, negligent and foolish of me not to assume that the thief might have gotten posession of one of my guns.0 -

We've all got the killer instict in us. Just like animals. And instinct can be usefull.
But God gave us higher intellect to over-ride instinct.
If a dog want's to lay in the street, it does it. W/o ever thinking of possible consequences. But as humans, we have the ability to reason. I'll bet the guy in Texas wishes he had thought things thru alittle more.
I'm not saying he did wrong. That's not for me to say. But I'll bet he wishes he hadn't done it now. A lesson we all might learn from. Not for the sake of those we might kill, but for our own sakes. Killing should not be a decision taken ligthly.0 -

All of which involves a physical confrontation. Defending yourself isn't the question.
But your thoughts have merit. The era of Old West bank robbing came to an end when the citizens of towns like Northfield MN. and Coffeyville Ks. defended their property. And came back later after carrying guns in town had been outlawed.
But there again, the people of these towns were confronted w/Armed thieves who used armed intimidation as a weapon.(that didn't work).
Stirctly speaking, do you think Jesus would agree w/you in regard to gunning down unarmed thieves?0 -

Lots of ifs here...but if I knew my family was safe I would let him go. If I suspected that he had hurt a member of my family he would consider him a threat and act within the law until he was no longer a threat. 0 -
If he was still in my home when I found him, the answer would be yes.
If already outside, and making no threats,.......I honestly don't know.
I am sure I would be tempted, but I can't say for sure what I would do.
No one really knows until it happens.
I hope I never have to make that decision.0 -
As far as i know at least in WI deadly force is never permitted to protect property 0 -
That guy in Pasadena was a double dumb-ass. He told the dispatcher he was going to go outside and kill the burglars. Then he carried his phone with him, still connected so the dispatcher could hear, and record him saying, "You're dead," and then firing three shots with a shotgun.
What he COULD have done? Call 911, report the offense, and location, and hang up. Then, if he felt he had to do something further, he COULD have armed himself and gone outside to confront, arrest, and hold the burglars for the police. If the burglars then did something to cause him to fear for his safety, then he could fire, and kill them, and the only version of the story would be his.
Double dumb-ass.0
