S10 Engine problems? :(
I have an S10, 4.3 V6 with TBI and 141000 miles.
I have recently replace the fan clutch, serpentine belt and thermostat. New fan clutch is excessively loud.
Edited to add that the truck ran fine with the new fan clutch for several weeks with no loss of power.
My problem is that the truck has all of a sudden lost power. Alot of power, I can still ride at 60 mph but going up even a slight hill I must shift to 3rd, where 5th used to be able to hold speed even on a steep hill.
The engine is very loud, sounds like a blowby somewhere. Perhaps the donut gasket? The fan sounds similar on startup but when the engine warms up the fan freewheels most of the time.
Would a blown donut gasket hurt power like this. The truck actually sounds normal when idling or cruising without giving much gas, but if I step on it, you get alot of rushing air sound and a low growl, not of power but almost that the engine is straining too hard.
What could be wrong? I hope I can stop in to my mechanic tomorrow and have him check it out. I hope it is something easy but it may be the first big spike in the coffin. [xx(]

OK, why did you replace the other parts? Was it running hot? If so, you might have blown a gasket or cracked a head. Tom 0 -
Old fan clutch bearing wore out and I was worried the fan would come off soon.
Changed the belt just because the old one was getting worn.
The truck eats a thermostat a year, actually runs too cold. I keep changing them so that the engine will run at 195.0 -
Turn your fan around. Don 0 -
yep, map, idle control, fuel control, sensors, plus o2 sensors could all effect computer if manifold pressure is lost... make a quick check to make sure a spark plug has not come loose and blown out of the hole 0 -

Sound to me like the fan is not working like it should I would get some packing tape and tie the fan to something that will not bend or break to keep it from turning and then take a short trip to see if you get the same sound and lost of power If you don't set at a stop light the engin will not over heat on a short trip . Just do this for a test and then remove the tape. 0 -

Sounds like that to me too.0 -
I with savage170
Get the exhaust checked out.0 -
Check for plugged converter ... NAPA used to make a *test-Tube* which was a straight pipe and would replace your converter ... funny thing is, I never met anyone that replaced their test tube with a new converter ... or re-installed their old converter either [}:)]
You didn't say what year your S10 is ... I believe all fan clutches are temp controlled ... they free wheel at low temp and engage at hi-temp ... this is the fuel saving feature of the fan cluch ... when its locked up its putting more drag on the engine.0 -

You may be right. I never thought about how fan clutches work before but it makes sense.
I do know they are nice when you got a couple of creeks to cross. Fan hits the water and stops. Don't throw it all over everything electrical under the hood.

The truck is a 94.
I almost think the fan is running opposite from normal. It sounds like it is engaged when the engine is cold and disengages at higher temps.
But, since I change it, the engine has run at the correct temp and for the first couple weeks I had no loss of power or any strange noise. This leads me to believe that it may not be the fan.
If it is the catalytic converter, I will just smash out the insides and replace so it looks like it is still there.0 -
Here is a link to the fan clutch I installed.

3rd one down on the list. Standard duty without A/C.0 -
I have a 4.3 in my pickup with 136,000 and was losing power and getting a rough idle.Ended up having to replace all 4 o2 sensors and cat conv.,not cheap, cost me around $700.Put it on diagnostics to avoid the guessing game. 0 -
I have a 94 s-10 blazer with the 4.3 vortec 240,000 on her and still runs strong. So as long as you have did your regular maintenance I think you can get a couple of miles out of her still. I had a similar problem which turned out to be a piece of carbon stuck in the EGR valve holding it open. There are just to many things it could be.It sounds like a vacuum leak. Hopefully you have a mechanic you can trust, save yourself some time and money replacing parts it may not be and let your mechanic figure it out for you.
Good Luck0 -
Sounds like a plugged up cat. converter to me. Or at least starting to plug up.... 0 -
Also if the fan clutch is stayn engaged more it means the engine is runnin a bit hotter, even though it may not show on gauge. When the cat. starts cloggn up it will not breath, and holds back the hot exhaust gas. 0 -
My 4.3L starting running hot at 126,000. I replaced everything......
But it was a plugged up catalytic convertor robbing power and holding heat into the motor.
When you have trouble with "pinging".....don't matter what you do to the timing....it's always screwed up.....unplug the knock sensor. The clutch rattling around sets off the knock sensor and screws up the timing causing the pinging.0 -
Right on mine did the same BAD catalic converter.<1fmj> 0 -
Clogged cat? Or maybe it has something to do with having 140,000 miles on it. Check your compression...[;)] 0 -
Just got back from my mechanic and he suggested I plan a meeting with my cat converter and a steel pipe. [:D]
He thinks that it is definitely the converter is clogged. He won't "unclog" it for me but basically told me what needs to be done.0 -
Ruger, save the guts out of the converter, if you can. Used/old converters are selling for big bucks now. The palladium or whatever is in there is worth more than platnum. Tom
OOPS, I'm wrong! Palladium is only $300+ an ounce and Platnum is over $1400!0
