FREE CREDIT REPORT???
Do any of you have a link where you can get a free credit report without all this junk on the net. How can they get away with "free credit report, $19.99" For the life of me, I can't find a site where you can actually get a free report even tho the USGOV has decreed that they MUST give you a free report once a year. I will appreciate any and all help. Thanks, Tom

I would not put your SSN online, no matter how secure they claim to be. I would just go to your bank and ask them about it. It is worth the $$ they might charge to not have your SSN online. 0 -
99% of the "free" sites will only tell you information like what credit cards you have, home mortgage, car loans, bank loans and a bunch of other information that you quite likely already know (I'm sure you are aware of that car payment every month...right?). If you want the hard details on your credit, including your actual credit score, expect them to hit you up for a fee. 0 -
You need to go to the credit reporting agencies such as Experian, Equifax or Transunion. These companies under law must provide you with a report once a year for free. 0 -
This is the one you want.
https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp
It will give you your report from all 3 major credit reporting as required by federal law.
It is not a commercial site.
It will not give you your credit score free though.

True, but it is just a credit report. It doesn't give you your credit score. You will have to pay something to get your credit score.0 -
i can expound on this slightly from whats already been said. there are two parts of what is generally reffered to as the credit report. the report itself, which list all outstanding lines of credit and their balances and payment status. the other part is the numerical score. you can get your report(w/o score) free once per year, as mandated by law. the law does not say they have to provide you with the score, which is the hook.
the report minus the score isnt a totally useless document. yes you know about the credit that YOU established(i.e. your mortgage, car note, credit cards), but what about the credit someone else may have established in your name( think identity theft, sneaky spouse etc etc). these you might have no knowledge until you review your report.
your credit score is, IMHO, only a minorly valuable piece of information. the only real value that i can see is having advanced knowledge of whether or not you will be eligible for offers advertised as "for well qualified buyers" and such. i see this as minimially valuable because you know what your credit is like and you should have a decent idea if your considered "well qualified" etc.0 -
You don't need the score if you have the reports.
I do what Pa Redneck suggests on June 1, every year, and I do it by calling the reporting agencies toll-free numbers and using the phone buttons to respond to the robot questions. A couple of weeks later, the reports come floating in, in the mail. NO COST AT ALL.

internet sites are BS...go to your bank & ask your loan officer to check it out for you ....its FREE 0 -
To be clear in this matter, by using https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp, you are entitled to a free report from each of the three companies. In order to keep tabs on my credit and as a protection against theft, I get one report every four months. This way I can monitor the whole year so to speak. 0 -
This is one of my major gripes - trust and domain names. The Govn't requires giving you the credit report, but they use a commercial domain - which for all the world to me seems like a scam, and I know computers. Why couldn't the Govn't just "given" the 3 companies $8 each year in the form of a .gov domain name?
Which would you trust to put your info in: www.freecreditreport.com or www.freecreditreport.gov or fcr.ftc.gov? hint - the last 2 may be run by scammers, but at least we elected them first....
Now imagine your AOL usin grandma - she's supposed to tell that freecreditreport.com is legit but creditcheck.com isnt'?0 -
I did freecreditreport.com for about 6 months. To get your 'free' report from 'one' agency, you have to submit all of your information and a valid credit card number up front. You will not be charged for the first report and there is no obligation to continue. BUT, if you want to stop the service within the 30 day period, you have to call them up and be hassled by somebody with an Indian accent over why you want to stop the service. They will most likely offer you a lower rate to continue. I did it for a few more months at like 9.99 a month. It gave me my full report and credit score, but the thing is, my score didn't change for months. Nothing changed really except for a few bills going down. So the only benefit to it is you can watch for fraudulent charges but you'll see them on your monthly statements anyway.
If you want to see your score from the other 2 companies, you have to pay 24.99. You are entitled to get your one free credit report from them once a year, but you'll have to go through all the hooplah every time.0 -
The security issue via the internet is why I call on their toll free phone numbers.
Far less chance of someone else grabbing my info.
I also do those kinds of things from a hard-wired phone, not cordless or cellular, so someone eavesdropping is less likely - BUT not impossible.

vess1, There is a big difference between freecreditreport.com and https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp. The first is a commercial site, the second is the Govt. mandated site. You need not pay a penny to get the three credit reports from https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp
What's more each person can get their own credit report, and I repeat, you do not have to pay. If we were so inclined my wife and I could each get a report from each agency ( Experian, Equifax or Transunion), for a total of six free reports per year.
Since my 19 year old son just bought a car and took out a loan, he too now has a credit history and gets a report three times a year.
If you choose to buy a credit score, that is a different matter. For that you must pay.
tccox, Once more, here is the link:

It is free, one per year from each agency. It is instant, takes a few minutes if you have personal info handy. It's as secure as any of your info is anywhere.0 -
I checked out the website. Some of the info at Experian on me was not correct. I also wonder why you have to pay to see your credit score? Why do people always want to nickel and dime us to death? My score probably hasn't changed from the last time I saw it anyway. 0 -
Is there an amount of time, statute of limitations if you will, when a debt might just disappear from the report? Paid or not?

Thanks to all. I finally got thru tonight. Transunion said I had an account but I could not access it without calling their 800 number. Equifax just verified my resdence but since I don';t have any bills, maybe that is just as well.Someone asked if old bills drop off the scale. I have heard that yes, they do, but the debt collectors never do. Case in point: you owe me but haven't paid me for ten years. I sell my accounts receiueable to a collection agency for 10cent on the dollar. You now owe them!! They will cut your grandmother's throat to collect that debt.
Bottom line, if you owe the debt, pay them. Tom0
