It's a lot more than that when you look at all the different variations of the silver dollar and others that we have had.
It is not likely that people are going to adopt the much heavier to carry dollar coin unless we do what the Canadians did, and just quite producing the $1 bill. I'm not a big fan of that process, but it did work.
The folks up north just started in with the $1 "Looney", and then introduced the $2 "Tooneys" a couple of years later.
For those who have not seen them, the $1 coin has a picture of a Loon on it, hence the name. The "Tooney" followed as a play on words from the cartoon shows.0 -

Dollar coins sound like a PITA to me too, but I don't understand all the hand-wringing that goes on over them. Either we decide we're willing to bear the cost of printing paper dollars, or we decide not to, and stop producing them. And suck it up and use the coins.

One would think it costs less to make dollar bills instead of dollar coins....metal usually costs more than paper, even the fabric paper they use for money. 0 -

They do cost more to make, but they last about thirty years instead of fourteen to eighteen months before they need to be replaced.[:)]0 -
I think the coins are mostly for the collector crowd. They will never, ever (in my opinion) replace the paper even if it is more practical.
Also, coin dealers make MAJOR bucks selling coins since they can amass whole series and sell as complete sets for those too lazy to collect individual coins, one at a time. Also, in some places you may only get "D" from the bank and other locals may only get "P". Almost impossible for the lone collector to get uncirculated coins from each mint. This is my thoughts on it anyway. Tom0
