You may want to post this in the 'Ask the Experts' area. Not taking anything away from this area but that's really what you seek.

I'm not sure what you call the tool, but there is a tool to measure the bore. And then you can refer to the specs to find out if it is worn very bad.

If it ever goes accuracy will go away.

Just before it turns red hot or catches your stock on fire. I'm just guessing, but those seem like good times to do it.

well I did have to change out the barrels on 20mm and 30mm guns.
I just wish I could have been the one to wear them out.

On a high powered overbore rifle accuracy can suffer at about 1,000 rounds. On a pistol the barrel wil last at least 25,000 rounds. on auto loaders the figure may approach 75,000 rounds.

I burned a barrel off of a S&W mdl 28 in two years. It took over 35,000 rounds of hot .357's to do it. The rifling was great. The top strap and forcing cone were burned away by a steady diet of 2400 powder and jacketed bullets. The lead loads were shot with unique and they were over book max.

pistols last a long time; keep shooting.

With an autopistol when bullets keyhole and / or accuracy falls off to an unacceptable level.
When corrosive ammo is used and a pit extends across a land or groove.
