Early Arizona..........
In the fall of 1876 Globe Arizona was just a small mining camp. As he had done many times before Thomas Hammond left one morning to go on a day trip to prospect the hills and washes in the area.
A day and night had passed and Tom didn't return to camp. Starting to get worried, Toms brother Andrew Hammond and four other men went to search for him.
They found his diggings and also found Tom, he had been murdered. From the way he was killed and the tracks they found, there was no doubt Apaches had done it. Andrew and three of the men took off following the tracks of the killers. They came up on the three Apaches in a wash about 6 miles from Toms diggings. Sweeping down on them from above the skirmish was over fast and as the smoke cleared the three Indians lay dead.
Satisfied that justice had been served, Andrew and the men headed back to retrieve his brothers body. Andrew bound the body in a tarp and lashed it to a horse.
Slowly the men made their way back to town. On a hill above Globe was a scraggly old scrub cedar tree and Andrew decided that it would be a good place for Thomas Hammonds final resting place. This was the first grave in the old Globe City Cemetery.

Globe is still a small place. Good history, but it will get covered up with progress, like all the rest of AZ. 0
