I need to take a bullet apart----how?

Several years ago someone gave me a 45 cartridge with a small hole drilled through it that I carried on my key chain for years. Don't ever know what happened to it. Got to thinking about making me another one.

Never tried this before; but, how can I safely remove the actual bullet from a 45 cartridge (without blowing part of me away) so that I can remove the powder, etc. Naturally, I don't want to scratch the bullet or case.

    You use a specialized tool called an inertia bullet puller. Absent one of these, go to a gunshop or a reloading store/person and ask them to pull your bullet for you. They will, or should, squirt some oil in the case to kill the primer. You can then simply superglue the bullet back into the case.

    Find someone that reloads 45ACP (or whatever) and have them make you up some dummy's (size/de-prime a fired case, bell the mouth, seat and crimp the bullet).

    Just shoot it into a dirt berm and go dig out the bullet and tap it back into the case.

    That's a very good point. Times have certainly changed and I sure wouldn't walk into a courthouse, airport, government building, etc. with that in my pocket. Makes no sense at all, but neither does the TSA 99% of the time.

    If you ask nicely I bet someone on this board that reloads would send you one if you don't know anyone local to do it.

    I just drilled a small hole in the lead of a 38 SW and put it on my keyring. Done that over 40 years ago never exploded or bothered anything. As a matter of fact its still there but looks as if all the powder has left the casing because the bullet is getting real loose in the brass.

    Just take a spent hull. After you do the drilling, you can then polish the case. Just insert a new bullet of your choice.

    Shooting into water does not damage the bullet as much as shooting into a dirt berm or a stack of wet newspapers.

    Drill the cartridge through both sides using a 1/8" drill and shake out the powder. Then deactivate the primer using penetrating oil.
    Popping the primer in your pistol might move the bullet. You can do that after deactivating the primer.
    In our Army unit when one came close to rotating back to the States
    he could carry a swagger stick made up of a one ft long piece of gnarled wood with half a 50BMC cartridge on each end.
    In making one, a fellow in the welding shop deactivated a 50 BMG primer using a torch which exploded the primer shooting him through the thigh.
