Grandpa found old 1860 Colt

Back in 1904 my Grandpa found a rusty and pitted 1860 Colt revolver. He had homesteaded in Wells county No. Dakota. It turned up in the field the second year he worked it.
It's an awesome thing to hold this relic in ones hands and ponder the times that this weapon had seen. Who had lost it and how?? A soldier, an Indian or perhaps an early fur trapper.
I recently checked out the Colt companies archive services price page and they want $300 for a search on it. I'm disappointed in that. And nearly as disappointed as I was when I bought their series 80 Gold Cup 1911 back in the 1980's.
No, the 1860 Colt is not for sale. [:)]

    It'd just about be worth the 300 to find out about it, but i'd be shocked if the #'s were still readable..

    The ser. # is very readable as the # was stamped on the brass trigger guard piece. The gun is in my safety deposit box, so it may be a few days before I post a photo.

    It hung in the old farm bunk house for many years. The gun butt has marks on it because it was used as a hammer to drive nails around the bunk house. When my Grandmom died back in the 1960's, most of the old stuff was sold at auction. An old Springfield 45-70 sold for $15.00. Luckily this old Colt was spared.

    Lead balls can be seen in the cylinder and the cylinder is frozen between two holes.

    Post about it on the "experts" forum. There are some knowledgable collectors over there. May at least be able to give you the year of MFg by the serial number. Maybe more.

    Lead balls in the cylinder means the gun is loaded.
    Old powder does go off so treat it with respect.
    If there are any caps on the nipples, ease them off carefully.
