Ever do anything this stupid?
Saw some rust on the pin at the bottom my Kel Tec P3AT (the one that holds the main spring) and decided to clean it off. Bad idea. Anyway long story short my stupidity just compounded upon itself and now I have a plastic baggy full of tiny little gun guts. Man what an idiot. I guess I'll be sending it back to the factory on Monday if they're open. Then it's wait and see how much my stupidity will cost me this time. The worst thing is that I could fix it if it wasn't so tiny and I'm going to be without my favorite carry gun for who knows how long. Any way I've got to get my uniform on and go serve the public trust for the next 13 hours. Please feel free to tell me what an idiot I am so I'll never do this kinda thing again and if anybody has any ideas that might help out please let me know.

I`ve got a gun I bought in pieces several years ago because the previous owner couldn`t get it back together. Guess what....I can`t either. Still sits in a plastic tray in little pieces. Don`t hate yourself for it. 0 -

When I was six I stuck my finger in a light bulb socket to and then flipped on the light switch to try and figure out how the light bulb knew to turn on.

Took apart a T/C contender for the first time a few months back. Could not for the life of me figure how to get the main spring back. Several posts here and on experts and finaly figured out that you had to insert a slave pin in to hold it in place and then insert the pin pushing out the slave... It is the simple things - no matter how meticulous you are in dissassembly and laying out your parts - that you should have some knowledge about before you try. But still we do and learn.... 0 -
First off, stop beating yourself up. Next, sit and look closely at the schematic and all of the parts. Identify them and lay them out and look to see their relationship to other parts. Then, try to establish how each part works. All of this is simple IF YOU STOP TRYING TO RE-ASSEMBLE THE GUN OUT OF FRUSTRATION AND EMBARRASSMENT!!!!
I will tell you that the spring #275 is not easy to reattach so you will have to fabricate something strong with a modest hook on the end to reach up into the cavity of the grip, catch the spring and hold it securely, align it with the hole in the frame and insert the retaining pin. Another set of hands will be very helpful. You may be lucky and get it by the sixth or seventh try.

...Never been so stuck, that I didn't get it back together in the end. A Swiss K-31 bolt is tons of fun. Some think that a Nylon 66 is hard, but after a few times doing anything, it gets easier.

Almost lost the action spring of a marlin 60 once. But i got lucky and found it. Damn thing took off and worst part was it wasnt mine. Found it and put it back together. 0 -
I took my P-11 apart---way beyond what i should have. I even had the schematics and the thing confounded me. I took it to JudgeColt and he had it back together for me in no time. He even fabricated a perfect Hammer Block Axis for me out of a nail. I lost the original. 0 -
Had a couple of my soldiers cleaning the standard (barrel support) on a 4.2 inch mortar. There was a little rust in the threads under the cap. so they decided to unscrew the cap. Took it to the motor pool, clamped in a vise, used a pipe wrench to unscrew the cap. The standard acts a shock absorber when weapon fires. Has two springs inside. One takes 2000 lbs to compress, the other, 4000. Took a chunk of concrete out of the wall of motor pool. Had to send back to factory to get put back. Compared to them, you did not do bad. 0 -

Seems to me that the stupid part was to allow the piece to get rusty, not the attempts at repair, which would have been unnecessary had preventative measures been taken to prevent the rust. 0 -

The light bulb trick and the mortor cleaning routine have to take the cake!![:D][:D][:D]
I remember when I was restoring my 1967 Corvette, jacking up the car and taking off the leaf spring that runs across the rear from wheel to wheel. All I had were hydralic jacks and jack stands to use. I blocked them up with scrap wood and jacked up the spring to take the tension off the bolts so I could romove the bolts. I removed the bolts and walked out of the garage and into the kitchen of the house.
I heard a huge bang and went back to the garage and the spring had cut loose and flipped one of the heavy jacks all the way across the garage and through the concrete block wall! It would have killed anyone that was standing in the way. That was a wake up call in my days as a backyard mechanic.[:0][:0]0 -
Your going to have to come up with something better than that to be stupider than anything I've ever done. I had to take an L. C. Smith side by side to a gunsmith in a basket, but I took it to another state so I wouldn't have to face the consequences locally. [:D]
You know it had to be done. If you hadn't done it, you wouldn't have been able to rest for the next twenty years thinking about that speck of rust. Look at the bright side. Now you will be rid of the speck of rust, and you'll probably recover financially in less than five years.0 -

I have a Ducktown TN single shot pistol that accidently disassembled.
The retaining ring came off the safety and I thought, "I better take that out before it falls out and gets lost."
Parts flew every which where. It's not worth paying a gunsmith to reassemble.0 -

When you mortar guys would bring your standards in to the shop for service, I could disassamble the top half and flip it over and break the cap loose, then place it on the floor and stand on the cap and twist it out with just my body wieght. I could even reassemble them after servicing by standing on it, but would have to grab something to help push myself down. There is a special tool to the job right, but it seems like they were always broke or missing. Lucky I was just a fat ass.[:D]0 -
I spent months troubleshooting an obsolete Remington 22. Typed my progress or lack of progress online at www.rimfirecentral.com. Learner how to take it apart. In the progress I clean parts that had never been cleaned. Finally figured out the problem. Shot a few dozen round from the deck and was all proud at what I accomplished.
First time I took it out to the pasture, I lost a vital setscrew. A semi auto was know a single shot. Spent the next few months searching online for the dang part. Had to pay $50 for a bag full of misc pins, springs and screws on an online auction because I only needed one dang obsolete setscrew!
Still have the bag of screws. For that money, I'm not gonna let it go. If I resold it, I'd probably only get $5.
Dang morphadite thread pitch. Couldn't just use a #10 setscrew.

hey I just replaced my first extractor spring on an ar-15 but I don't think I should take apart any kel-tecs though had a gunsmith tell me once " if you take that trigger group apart on your marlin 60, throw the whole thing away, it'll be cheaper to buy a new rifle than to have me to fix it"[:0] 0 -

Thanks got the schematic with the owners manual. The dang thing is just too tiny for me to get in there and fix it.0 -
Good news I hope. One of my pals at work is a Glock armorer and used to gunsmith. He said he should be able to get her up and shooting again. If not my local gunsmith said he can do it. I don't mind letting him know I screwded up it keeps him in business and laughing. 0
