Father forgives man who killed his hunter son
'It was an accident on his part'; prosecutor considers charges

When Bob Arndt stood face to face last week with the man who shot and killed his son, his message was one of forgiveness.
"I met the man. I forgive him. It was an accident on his part, the way we understand it," Arndt said in an interview Wednesday.
Beau Arndt was shot while goose hunting in Lyon County.
Arndt's son, Beau, died after being hit by a single rifle shot at about 8:25 a.m. on Dec. 15 while he was goose hunting in northwest Lyon County.
Beau Arndt's death came three days short of his 19th birthday. He had just returned to his family's home at Americus after living in a dormitory for the first semester of his freshman year at Emporia State University.
Beau Arndt was part of a hunting party that had put several dozen goose decoys in a field after getting permission to be on the land.
Authorities said members of the party were lying in the snow waiting for geese when a pickup truck stopped along a nearby road and someone fired at the decoys, striking Beau Arndt instead.
The truck then left.
Lyon County authorities said a tip led them last week to Topeka, where they located the three people who were in the pickup.
One of them, a 57-year-old Topeka man who is cooperating with authorities, is thought to have fired the fatal shot. His name and those of the others in the truck haven't been released.
Lyon County Sheriff Gary Eichorn said his office forwarded reports late last week to County Attorney Marc Goodman, who said Wednesday that no criminal charges had been filed as he was continuing to review the reports.
Bob Arndt said in a telephone interview Wednesday he was angry about his son's death but feels no animosity toward the man who shot him.
He said that while the man may have acted illegally by firing from the truck, Beau Arndt's being hit by a bullet was a complete accident.
Bob Arndt said he also feels convinced the man who killed his son left without realizing someone had been shot.
"If you've never done anything wrong - if you've never driven faster than the speed limit - then you might have a right to find fault," he said.
But people make mistakes, Bob Arndt said, so his son's death compels him to focus instead on encouraging others to be more careful - particularly if they are driving a car or hunting.
"I want to promote safety," he said.
Bob Arndt said safety had been a large part of hunting for his son. He said memorial contributions in Beau Arndt's name may be made to hunter safety education and sent in care of the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, P.O. Box 175, Emporia, Kan. 66801
Seems to me the shooter is guilty of invountary manslaughter. He was committing an unlawful act and as a result someone got killed.

I doubt that anyone could punish this man any more than he will be punished ... every day, for the rest of his life!

This is a tough one. But he shot from inside a pickup truck with 2 other people in it? sounds like he's guilty of somthing. 0 -
i would file charges too. the man illegally shot from his car. he was reckless for not identifying his target. also, i am assuming it was illegal for him to shoot at the decoy or what he thought might have been a real bird. 0 -
The man did break the law. In doing so someone died. I do not see how the prosecutor could keep from filing charges.
If you were speeding and hit someone that walked across the road, you could expect to get charged with involuntary manslaughter.

this was a deliberate criminal act breaking several laws & violating common sense....a WHOLE lot different than occasionally going 67mph...he should be prosecuted..remorse---i have met people that don't give a damn about anybody or anything as lot as it does not affect them 0 -
If I were that father I would want the book thrown at this irresponsible bas****.
He fired from a vehicle, he did not make sure of what his target was, he used a rifle for "goose hunting."
Did he have a hunting license and migratory bird stamp?

An emotional self punishment is no substitute for our legal process. If he is found innocent and has to live with it then that's ok but to avoid charges is just as wrong as the illegal shooting 0 -
Yes, I would have forgiven him, but I would have also liked to see him rot in prison for the remander of his life. When you forgive someone it sets you free, it does not set the scumbad free to do it again. 0 -

Shooting from a vehicle in a roadway, at waterfowl with a rifle, presumably without a license. Yep, I think that sounds like an accident. Accidental imprisonment would be about right. 0 -

Criminally negligent homicide and flight to avoid prosecution.
Add this to broken game laws of hunting from a truck, no fed wildfowl licence,use of a rifle on wildfowl,shooting at migratory waterfowl on the ground.
I suspect he hit what he was aiming at, thinking it was an animal,he found out and took off.
