Well, we talk guns all the time in the OT section over there, so I'll recommend another web forum - Pelican Parts! Not only good parts supply place with good service, prices, etc. but the community is great (at least the Porsche ones... dunno about MB, but why not?!)

Vaccuum leak. Look for disconnected lines under the hood or a bad vaccuum pump. What year is it?

red sounds right. Lack of vacuum would produce those results. I believe the 300TD had a vacuum powered main fuel valve. My old 220Ds had the mechanical valve & glow plug control. There is a mechanical pump on the front of the block on the left side - needed because the diesel has virtually no intake vacuum. You should see a semi-clear plastic tube around 5/8" dia. What I don't understand is the "no apparant damage" part of your post.

    Andy is/was right.

I had a friend suggest that I look for a vacuum leak so I was out in the yard with a flashlight looking all over the place for a loose hose. My 7 YO walks up and says "what's that noise" I couldn't hear snot. So he goes "It's right there" and points to a loose hose that I connected and all is well.

This is the coolest car ever. 1985 and a cream colored...if I knew how to post pics I'd take some to show you
