so whats your method of filling cracks in asphalt?

    How deep are the cracks? There are several methods, some easy and some time consuming. For small cracks you can buy a sealent that is much like roofing tar, is heated and then poured into the cracks to seal them and prevent moisture from entering and degrading the base, which will lead to the dreaded pot holes! If you have large cracks then you are going to have to take more serious action. Cold mix asphalt, the kind sold in sacks, is a temperary fix only and it will not last through heavy weather so don't plan on using it for anything besides emergency repairs or filling very small voids. If you do use cold mix try and chisel out as much of the damaged asphalt around the cracks as possible and then place a generous amount of cold mix in the crack. After this place a 1X6 board over the crack and then run your car over the board to compact the mix. If you have BIG cracks you'll need hot mix asphalt, probably 3/8 fine patch or so called school mix (extra fine patch). This has to be used hot (300 degrees) and is a mess to work with so the holes have to be large enough to justify buying a ton of hot mix from a nearby asphalt plant.

    Lowes sells a liquid crack filler that you don`t have to heat.Can`t remember the name of it,but have about 6 or 8 bottles of it at work. Just pour it in.

    kristov is correct. Any other method would be temporary.

    Asphalt requires maintenance in the form of seal coating to prevent the cracks from enlarging and degrading the base.
