Hand forged cut nails?
I was visiting a millionaire's house yesterday, it is owned by some distant in-laws, believe me, I am not cut in on the inheritance.
This house is in a very expensive development in the NC mountains. This place has its own golf course, and its own private airstrip. These are mostly second/vacation homes, and a lot of the residents will leave a Land Rover at their house, and just fly in for the holidays in their Cessna. Then, one of the servants at the resort will drive them from the airstrip to their house. This is what the doctor does who owns this house.
At any rate, the house I was in had to be worth $2.5 to $3 million. It is a seven bedroom house, on top of the mountain at 4,000 feet, views are spectacular. The house is timber framed and the workmanship is just beautiful. The house really is a work of art.
There is about 3,500 sq. ft. of flooring, it is all the most expensive grade of 8 inch heart pine. This flooring is nailed in with cut nails.
I noticed that the nail heads looked like they were hand forged, you could see six or eight sides on the heads where it looked like the blacksmith had hand forged them.
For God's sake, they would have used 30 or 40 pounds of flooring nails in this house.
Is there anybody who makes real hand forged flooring nails today?

...I'm sure there is someone who makes hand forged nails but, the nails your talking about are probably mass-produced to look hand forged/old; the "hammered" nails are readily available to help carry the "old rough" appearance...[;)]

I earned my money Hourly at a Union job, but I live in a really nice area. I have friends that: Have a 6000+ sqft home, complete with a "Bus Barn" for two buses - one space for their Marathon/Prevost bus camper, and one space for their visiting friends' bus, and a washstand and turnaround/display pad for same. They also have a spare Completely Duded out Honda Gold Wing for anyone who wants to use it when they visit. Another friend has a barn with a lift, and spaces for their collection of Ferraris - last count - fifteen! Another has a brand new Corvette, with less than 15 miles on it, from every year they have been made. He buys two of the top model every year, drives them home, puts one up for storage, and drives the other for a year. It is a sickness - wish I could afford it!0 -

Some pretty good links, nononsense. The British link has real hand forged nails, they cost .45 Pounds each, as best I could see, for a 2 inch nail. I think that would be pretty expensive for an entire house, not sure what a Pound is worth.
That other link is probably the one, machine made nails that look hand forged for $10 a pound or so.
These were not the regular cut nails like you buy at the Depot. I have used many pounds of them, I have installed pine floors with cut nails in three entire houses. These nails have multiple, rough facets on the head, look hand forged. They do look like the nails at the tinytimbers web site.
The funny thing is, there were five adults at that house, and I was the only one who noticed the nails, or had any idea of what they were.
The house is four years old, and I am probably the first visitor who has ever noticed, or appreciated, the nails.0 -
I worked on a house many moons ago where the shakes on the porch roof were all nailed with square cut nails, owner said the house was there before the civil war.
It sits within walking distance of Detroits eastern market, I would not take a job in that area today.[:(]

Supposidly that was what a two penny etc. nail was. Two penny was both its size and the price from the blacksmith. 0 -
Currently the British Pound is exchanging for US $2.07.
I looked at such houses some years agon just North of Ketchem, Idaho. I asked a local businees man what one did in Ketchem to be able to afford a 2 to 3 million $ house. He said, "You don't understand, there is nothing you can do in Ketchem to afford one of those houses, though are week-end houses of people with REAL money."
I ain't use $1 nails myself.

I mean, what does your net worth need to be, that you can afford a $3 million vacation house that you only use one weekend a month?

Allen you don't understand REAL money, Try a net worth in the hundreds of millions. Britiany has an income of over $700,000 per month (all of which she spends). PER MONTH! And she is not even working. Hey, she does save by not buying underpants, it is not like she is an airhead spendthrift.
Harrison Ford had a house there, but I doubt it was one of the smaller onces like I saw.0
