What have ya got to lose? Unless there's toxic waste in the creek or free roaming mutant cannibal hillbillies in the area, ya might as well.

...Yea, there's a state park somewhere in Arkansas where you can look for diamonds.

Gold has been reported in the Ozark region of southern Missouri, however most occurances have been in Macon, Adair, Livingston, Linn, Putnam, Randolph and Schuyler counties. But what the heck I have found small amounts of trace gold in places it hasn't been reported and the precious stones can show up in your pan to. A man could have worse past times.

I live in an area of the Mo. Ozarksthat is known for it's lead
mining. About 30 years ago it was rumored that there was also a huge
slab of copper down there. Well, this rumor finally came about, and
they've been mining scads of copper and silver from there for quite
    sme time now.
About 10yrs ago I also heard a rumor that there's a large area with lots
of gold, and it would'nt surprise me a bit if they start mining that
after they've depleted the other materials..which can't be too much
    longer.

If I were panning for gold there, I would be looking in the granitic parts of the state. The geology of limestone makes gold pretty unlikely.
