Who else here is a die hard fly fisherman?
Do you live to fly fish too? Are you a "hatch matcher"? Do you have a hard time getting out of that stream when you know you're already an hour later than you promised the wife? Do you tie flies too? If so, what types and how often do you tie? I learned from my father, who learned from his father (I don't know where he learned). Is this fishing "art form" still being passed down to the next generations in your part of the country? It's alive and well in Montana. [^]

Some do it in missouri, I havent, No. Dad has. I like fishing. we got a boat last year or year before, havent taken it to the river yet, its always full of people, so ive been fishin at my aunts lot. 0 -
I fly fish but live in the desert, so I guess you couldn't say I live to fly fish. 0 -
Forget the hatch, fish the Adams. Don't tie them myself any more. A few thousand dozen tied commercially was enough, and they are so cheap these days. 0 -
I used to tie and fly fish all the time. I was obsessed with it and still have some incredable memories on streams, rivers, lakes and in float tubes on lakes of Mount Rainier and in waders in the Olympic national park.
That was back when I had free time.
Dry fly fishing in Mount Rainier park and catching 16 to 20" wild Rainbow trout ranks right up there as some of the best times in the wilderness.
I remember one night we had camp set up about 50' from the lake shore and were cooking something to eat after dark. I kept hearing the slap of a large fishcoming out of the water right at the shore line. It was obviously eating some kind of surface bug so I told my friend I was going to go catch it.
Very first cast out, which was under 10' from the shore, I hooked, fought and landed a beautiful chrome bright 18" wild rainbow. All this happened in the dark. That fish ran and jumped and splashed and made memory that is fresh evn today.
Fly fishing is some of the best times of my life and I will go again. Hopefully it will be in the near future.0 -
Wife is one of the design engineers for Ross Reels so fly fishing is a big part of our life. I'm no purest when it comes to fly fishing but it is fair to say when it comes to my family...a river runs through it. 0 -
[8D]-We used to fly-fish for "SHAD" in the North fork of the FEATHER river-used my old Fenwick 5-pc rod & reel-been a while-

i like to fly fish,not diehard no.but its a rush to hook a 2-3 bass on a fly rod.i mostly use it for panfish.dont have any rivers here in illinois that i would fly fish in but like to in private ponds. am currently in the market for a new flyrod,someone stepped on mine in the camper and broke the tip off[:(!] 0 -
I try to go fly fishing a few times each year. Fish for trout in the spring and smallmouth bass later when it warms up. Hard to find enough time for it these days, but, do enjoy going whenever I can. flyfishinginmaine is a great site for enthusiasts, lots of good people there who know their stuff, although I do think it fair to say that some, not all, fly fishers can be a bit snobbish. I have hundreds of flies, streamers, nymphs, accumulated over the years and a handful of rods that I like to use; with the favorite being an all-purpose 8' LL Bean graphite. Everyone has a secret fishing spot. Mine requires a long paddle up a river, then a portage off about a mile to a series of 3 connecting small spring fed ponds that still have some native brookies. I found it by accident on a canoe trip years ago. No road to it, YET. Usually go in May and camp overnight. 0 -

I'm getting going on the fly fishing. Bought two new rods and reels in the last month. Just got a new creel, waders, and a net too. Now could someone explain to me how tie those little fly thingies? [;)][:o)] 0 -
Can't see the end of a two pound tippet or the eye of a midge in the dusk anymore.
I admire the fisherman who can match the hatch, tie the right nymph
and catch fish. My consolation is in having better tasting fish by keeping them alive all day until ready to cook.
Once while running out of the Rangely Maine woods in semi darkness, I came close to tripping over a bedded down moose. He scrambled to his feet 10 feet away on the trail while I held a HiPower on him.
After a long 10-15 seconds he made way and I was able to get out

Always keep the wooly bugger at hand , except when looking at a pool where there's a 10" native Brookie. There I go dry.

I am a beginner at fly fishing. I have a couple fly rods and always said I was gonna take lessons but never did. I went to the lake and try a few times but never could cast as far as most and sometimes had a tangled mess..
Someday I'll take a lesson.. I would love to feel a fish on the end of those flexable rods..0 -

I think in truth, what I really love is wading. Fly fishing makes me look like a serious guy, a not like a kid out playing in the rivers. Upon retirement I plan to wet a line in some of the legendary rivers that still have public access. I like the look of the Snake out by Jackson lake, and I guess I gotta try the Bitteroot, the madison, the Frying Pan and a few others. Gonna be shinin' times. 0 -
Trout season opens on the Ausable River in April. I just bought a new Ross reel and W.W. Grigg 8" 5/6 wt. rod. Its been a few years since I've fly fished. I'm counting the days! 0 -

When you are out west, drop by Washington state and fish the Yakima river.
World class trout fishing. it is a fly only river and catch and release only. or i think you can keep one but no one does.0 -
