AMERICA's elder statesman of finance, Alan Greenspan, has shaken the White House by declaring that the prime motive for the war in Iraq was oil.
In his long-awaited memoir, to be published tomorrow, Greenspan, a Republican whose 18-year tenure as head of the US Federal Reserve was widely admired, will also deliver a stinging critique of President George W Bush's economic policies.
However, it is his view on the motive for the 2003 Iraq invasion that is likely to provoke the most controversy. "I am saddened that it is politically inconvenient to acknowledge what everyone knows: the Iraq war is largely about oil," he says.

Wow! Such a revelation from Greenspan.
Of course it was partly (dont know if it was largely) about oil. Oil is the LIFEBLOOD of any industrialized nation. All it would take is for all of the OPEC nations to band together and agree to stop selling oil to the US and sell only to Russia, China and those who oppose us. This country would collapse in less than 12 months IMHO...we need oil to power our industrial base, grow crops, heat our houses, run our vehicles and keep our military operational.
I have done three tours in the sandbox since 2003, and I have always felt that Bush used the wrong excuse to go into Iraq.
He should have been upfront and honest...
1. Hussein HAS HAD WMDs and has REFUSED to show proof of destruction
2. Hussein has committed crimes against humanity
3. Hussein has committed environmental crimes (oil wells in Kuwait)
4. We helped put him in power...we will remove him
5. He is simply a destabilizing force in the region0 -
i wish i had a dollar for every time someone here threw a fit when someone else said the war was over oil

As for going to war for oil, I don't believe that's true... but even if it is... oil is a damned good reason when you think about it. Wars have been fought over less important things.0 -
Then why is not every barrel of oil pumped in Iraq, being sold to us, for a greatly reduced price?
Greenspan is like all the rest,.......he is out of his position, but has to continue to be an influence, to maintain his ego. These guys never just fade away.
They just can't keep their mouths shut after they leave,......and oh yeah,........who doesn't write a book anymore?
I don't understand how all of these books are sold! I guess a lot of people do nothing but sit on their butts, and read all day.
The media outlets have become fatladys to lawyers, and hucksters espousing their newest book.

Wrong. He was a stabilizing force. He was a counterbalance to our enemy, Iran. He also disliked al Quaeda and did not let them operate in Iraq.

The war in Iraq was for oil - just not for us.
The war was fought over oil for several reasons:
1) To give it back to the Iraqi people
2) To keep it out of Chinese hands, so to speak.
and
3) To increase demand in the short term and keep profitability up in the long term by ensuring that American companies got the maintenance contracts for Iraq's oil infrastructure.
As for these other points:

Reality is just so hard for some people to accept. Some of us have been saying for years we went to Iraq for two reasons...avenge a contract on daddy...and sew up a major oil field.

1st let me say that I am glad that Saddam is dead!!
2nd I've read a few reports that were published in in the UK that shows that not only did we know that Iraq destroyed it's WMDs, but it is very probable that the CIA had members at the scene to wittness it!!!
3rd The day that Saddam was hanged, in fact at the very minute..Iraqi TV aied video of Saddam walking down a street with a handgun blowing the brains out of several victims... to remind the Iraqis why he must die...it was gruesome to say the least...
4th if it was about oil...so what... Saddam needed to die!!0 -
You can be for or against the war and I won't interfer, however, if you tell me the war was'nt/isn't over oil, my comment is you must be wearing blinders and/or you have'nt been doing enough reading, there are at least 20 books that establish facts that indicate th war is over oil. Having made that statement, I didn't say the war was not necessary for our survivial, that's a hard queston I am just not sure about the answer. 0 -

Because the oil companies are entitled to make a profit.
The largest profit ever.
Multinational corporations have no aliegence or loyalty to anything or any one except the bottom line for shareholders. They are worse than amoral and will sell the world down the tubes as long as they can make a profit in the last hour.0
