$80: How'd I do (and what's it worth?)
Everything on the towel followed me home today for $80. What's it worth?
We have:
Norinco SKS 7.62 x 39 mm.
-I don't think the wood's been refinished.
-Serial numbers on stock, trigger assembly, 10-shot mag, receiver, and bolt all match
-Receiver cover appears to have been replaced with an after-market version that accepts a side-mount scope-base.
-Receiver has been drilled and tapped to accept the above cover.
-Moderate bluing wear and dings on metal. minor dings on stock.
-The little tool kit is present, but I don't know enough to know if it's complete.
-Bayonet is included but the screw to hold it in place is missing.
30-round after-market magazine (USA Magazines) with some rust spots.
Ultralux 4x25 scope on a Leapers scope mount
Combat Exchange plastic stock with gas tube and sling.
Appx 30 rounds ammo.
Gun case.

depends on where you are. over here, in CA, a pretty beat up norinco is at least three hundred. this one look like a lot more than that, plus all the extras, i'd say it's a pretty good deal for $80, definitely worth more than that, i'd say it's definitely over $400. 0 -
At the rate ammo is going, you might have 80 bucks worth of ammo alone![:p]

I sold an SKS with a plastic stock like that for 175$ a few years ago, no extras. I'd estimate all you got there is in the range of 230-260$ for a good used price, not cutting a deal. 80$ is most definitely a deal.
needs cleaning rod.
the clean kit is missing a brush. the short metal piece isn't tapered (from what I can see) so I'm guessing it's got hexagonal sides on it, that's for poking through the gas port to clean out crud. the poky thing on the sight adjustment tool probably substitutes for a legitimate punch (about the same size and length as the gas port tool), you'd do better with the punch instead of that.
the few missing items and the bayonet screw are easily found and cheap. no problem.
the 30 rnd fixed mag is unreliable, I wouldn't even bother with it. the only completely reliable SKS mags I've found are the 10 rounders stuck on it (what you have).

The short metal piece is neither tapered nor hexagonal. The tip has broad rifles and swivels about the stem; the stem is hollow and tapped to receive a cleaning rod. I think this attaches to the missing cleaning rod and drives the patch through the bore.

Hard to tell the age of the thing by the pic. Usually the first two digits of the serial# denote the year of mfg. ie. 10 would be 10th yr or 1966. The factory code, usually inside a triangle, can also affect the value. Very early models had all milled parts and screwed barrels. Later barrels were pinned and the trigger group was of lower quality. I can check it for you if you want to send me an email.
Assuming it's a late model 65 or after and not a rare factory code, the rifle is $175-200 in excellent cond. For collectability, the scope mount actually reduces value. The rest of the accessories make it a really fun shooter and are probably worth another $120-$140 new. You got a GREAT deal!
You may only be able to use the 30rd mag, with the aftermarket stock. The wood stock usually has to be modified to use them. i've never had much luck with them, myself.

I'd venture a guess at $375 to $400. Wait till you try to shoot your rifle with that synth stock. The pistol grip on that thing is completely wrong. Its unlike any other rifle stock in the world. 0 -
I'm more curious to know what's wrong with it? For $80 and things are messed up it's still a good parts gun. 0 -

Thanks for the info. Serial number is 18XXXXX so I guess it was manufactured in 1974.
I doubt it's anything special but I may just send you photos of the factory mark to see if you know something about it. How do I tell if the barrel is pinned?
I said above that the receiver had been drilled and tapped to accept the receiver cover with the scope mount. When I took it apart I was pleased to see that the screws I thought had been driven into the receiver were just set screws. They marked the receiver a little but at least it's not drilled. I'll replace that receiver cover if I find one that's closer to original.

You mean the plastic stock? FWIW, the pistol grip seems a little odd to me and SAV99 calls it 'completely wrong.'

It actually seems to be in pretty good shape. It sends bullets where I point it and seems to cycle just fine. I only put about 25 rounds through it before buying. I didn't want to give the guy a chance to change his mind.0 -
