    similar to a dvd but high definition, and stores up to 25 gigs on a single layer disc, 50 on dual


    i'm not jumping on it yet, i'll wait to see if it becomes the next laser disc, or beta max

    yep, dvd hd is enough. i tried to explain to a guy who insist on getting a blueray burner, and player that he was wasting his money because he does not have a hd television, but what do i know

    To add to what's been written above.

    Blu-ray is one of two competing types of High-definition DVD on the market right now. (The other is just called HD-DVD).

    These have a significantly better picture than a standard DVD, but as mentioned above, to see the difference you have to have a high-definition video source.

    Sony is behind Blu-ray, and the disc-reader in the Sony Playstation III game is a Blu-ray (meaning if you buy that video game, you already have a Blue ray DVD player).

    In terms of Sony's product vs. the other, the picture quality is equivalent. The difference between the two formats can be summed in about one sentence:

    Blu-ray discs hold significantly more information, but they are more expensive (per disc) and somewhat more fragile.

    If you ever saw them side by side on a proper HD display (that's key), its a pretty dramatic difference, actually. I think your eyesight would have to be pretty lousy not to notice it.

    But its not the only one. High-def discs hold multiple times as much information as standard DVD discs, making them useful for certain applications (eg video games, mass data storage, etc).

    In the tape wars SONY's Betamax lost out to JVC's VHS mainly because the port industry went with VHS. See which way they go with DVD's and you'll know which one to buy. [:D]

    A way to milk more money from the consumer, I like that answer.

    I have a ton of movies on VHS, then switched to DVD. Now they want you to buy them again in Blu-ray [:(!][:(!]

    ...or, this time, see if one of them uses Digital Rights Management and knocks themself out of the running. I would guess Sony (blu ray). or maybe they'll wait until they got the monopoly before they throw that on us.

    First there was 8 track, then cassette, then Beta and VHS, now CD and DVD have replaced those. I have owned some record albums in three formats CD and DVD will have to last.

    Tell me it is not about money.

    I ain't got blue teeth either, I'm sticking to these originals.
