i am deeply offended!!!
first off i am NOT a gun snob, although i think older guns were much better made with the materials available at their respective times, i have no problem with "black" rifles, stainless etc...
HOWEVER
cleaning up a stock for a little more practice. it was covered with about 3/16" of BLACK EPOXY PAINT! it was bad enough that someone cut down a stock for a pistol grip let alone this crap! (and for a tube feed bolt action s.g.?)
the worst part of all was the fact that underneath it all was some of the staightest grain walnut i have seen in quite a while[:(]
we have no idea what ever became of the action that was in this one, so it was fair game for me to butcher, will have to remember to post a pic or two over the weekend if i get it finished to show you all what ive been up to(if it looks decent enough for display[:I])

If it is nice wood, any chance of saving enough to make a few sets of 1911 grip panels, etc. out of it? 0 -
i like how as you get older everybody always talks how things arent made like they used to be. LOL 0 -
...I have come to appreciate the durability of SOME synthetic stocks, still don't like 'em...but have there place in funky weather; as does SS.
I prefer wood...but find myself being way too careful w/my really nice wood stocks sometimes, to protect from dings; which happen regardless.
Bubba's have been around a long time doing their "thing"...and I'm sure will continue being around.
Change of subject, a little, still about what people do to nice wood!
Several years ago, I saw a nice size (aprox.30"tX3'wX20"d) pc of furniture on the side of the road, in one pc...one big top drawer, two drs. under the drawer. Thing was painted black, w/black & white HOUNDSTOOTH (Yasser Arrafat looking crap[:D]) cloth in the dr. panels.
...First thought...shop cab! Took it home, and noticed some nice grain under the black enamel. Stripped it, BEAUTIFUL OAK! Re-finished it, found some old colored leaded glass that fit the dr. panels perfectly...seems it was an antique Server...gave it to my daughter....awesome pc...[;)]

It would seem the name OLD magics would be some kind of clue, but I know you are just a young feller. I think you are a gun snob, I mean anyone that does not like a nice epoxy paint job? Working mans black rifle and you are dissing it? Probably have pet frogs too.[}:)]
Straight grain? Hmmmm, I have always liked lots of figure, but I think pistol grip slabs is a great idea. That or maybe a stock for a lever gun. Have fun!0
