Herters Article in Field & Stream...
Just read an article about George Leonard Herter in Field & Stream this month. Kind of disapointed in Dave Petzal who wrote it. Guy might have had some prersonal problems but he did have a lot going for him. Built himself up from nothing & all. His wife is still alive in a nursing home in Edina MN and his boys are all doctors. Could not have been a total idiot.
He was ahead of his time in his proprietary cartridges and reloading manuals. Definitely knew his guns...yes he was a tireless self promoter but that was how he made his living. His reloading stuff would not interchange with other companies ...that was a major mistake on his part...might still be around today if so.
One thing...even today long after they went under that Herters name means something. I still have a couple Herters dies that work as well as the day they came out of the box, a herters knife I got when I was 12 that still holds an edge well, and I love reading his cookbooks.
If we could all leave such a legacy I think we would do well. Any thoughts from anyone else?

That reminds me.I subscribed to Field and Stream a little while back and haven`t recieved it as of yet.Guess they don`t like me. Now I`ll have to go out and buy it to see the article. 0 -
I remember visiting a Herters store in Mitchell SD when I was a kid. It was like a miny Cabela's. Even had the whole museum theme going on like Cabela's does. 0 -

Swede,other than the shell holders what reloading stuff would not interchange with other reloading Companies ? I still have the first Herter reloading outfit I bought in 1955 which includes a powder measure and scale made by Reading with the Herter name on them.Below is a picture of a Herter Double ram Press that I leave set up for .270 caliber.

I was disappointed they went under. His C press is still in use along with a powder measure, scale and a walnut gun cabinet.
His African veldt ankle high shoes lasted me about 15 years. They really came into their own after two weeks of stream wading.

I am sorry I should have been more specific, when I was talking about non-interchangeability I meant the shell holders specifically.
As to the Filed & Stream issue, it was the DEC/Jan one on the stands now.
Like I said he may have been a tireless self promoter, but his stuff has good reputation even after 40 yrs.
Hey Warpig...I never made to the Mitchell store but they had one in Glenwood MN that was really cool. They kind of Pre-Cabela'ed Cabelas.
The Mitchell store is now a part of Trail King Industries. A friend of mine used to work there and he told me that they had underground rifle & pistol ranges under the basement that still exist where they did their testing. Sadly now they are only used for storage. If you are driving by on the Interstate you can still see the Herters sign outline if you look close.

I used to love reading the Herter's catalog in the '70s.
I bought a Herter's knife. It was a great knife for skinning deer. Unfortunately, I lost that knife in the wilderness of Canada.

I love reading about all those old herters rounds. 401 powermag, 270 powermag, etc. Some day I will run across one & pick it up.
I still think the man was ahead of his time as to cartridge design. Hell they even sold wasp-waisted bullets of all things. He had his own version of magnum cartridges.
Those catalogs were a real good read. I love his books to if you can find them.

I used Herter's fly tying materials in the late 50's for tying flies commercially, and tied on a Herter's vice. I have several Herter's catalogs from the 60's. I also own a Herter's XJ-3 Rifle in .257 Roberts. I too visited the Mitchell, SD store, in the mid 70's, shortly before they folded. They were the Cabela's/Bass Pro/Gander Mtn. of their day and more.
